The onion usually has small, dark red side onions.
Stem with flat foliage.
The inner stamens are widened at the base and have two filamentous appendages on the side of the tip carrying the dust bag.
Blossom: only the lateral thread-like appendages of the inner stamens protrude above the tepals.

The round leek is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 30 to 80 cm. The onion is surrounded by several blackish and long-stalked onions. The leaves are narrowly lanceolate, grass-like and up to 10 mm wide.

The inflorescence is strikingly dense. The inflorescence has a characteristic, elongated shape due to the elongated flower stalks of the central flowers. The flowers are dark purple in color. The stamens are about as long as the bracts .

The chromosome number of the species is 2n = 16 or 48.

Occurrence and endangerment

The round leek is common in Central and Southeastern Europe, as well as in Southwest Asia. It occurs from Central Europe to Iran. It grows on disturbed semi-arid lawns, on embankments, along the edges of dry forests and bushes. It used to be found on the edges of fields. It prefers moderately dry to moderately fresh, base and nutrient-rich loess, loam and clay soil in warm locations. He likes to appear in societies of the order Polygono-Chenopodietalia.

The round leek is listed as endangered in the red list of fern and flowering plants in Germany.
