Ryuichi Yamashiro
Ryūichi Yamashiro ( Jap. 山城隆一 , Yamashiro Ryūichi * 10. November 1920 in Osaka Prefecture , Japan ; † 24. March 1997 ) was a Japanese graphic designer , typographer and graphic designer specializing in commercial art and internationally known for his poster art .
life and work
Ryūichi Yamashiro studied at the Osaka Municipal Polytechnic ( 大阪 市立 工 芸 学校 ), which he graduated in 1938. He worked for a time for the department store ( Depāto ) Hankyū Hyakkaten and then set up as a freelance graphic artist in 1952. In 1958 he was responsible for the color design and the wall painting for the Japanese pavilion at the world exhibition in Brussels . He worked as an artistic advisor to the Asahi chemical plant , Toshiba and other industrial companies. He was visiting professor at the Institute for Design in Kanazawa and one of the directors of the Nippon Design Center .
In 1964 his most famous poster: Hayashi-Mori was shown at the documenta III in Kassel in the graphics department . He designed the Hayashi-Mori poster for a campaign to protect forests ( Forest Protection Movement ). Hayashi-Mori means: "Grove - forest". HAP Grieshaber described the poster as " the most beautiful poster in the world " when he looked at it .
His work has received numerous awards, including the silver and bronze medals of the Art Director Club Tokyo in 1957 and 1960 and numerous other national and international awards.
