Ryan is a town ( Town ) in Jefferson County , Oklahoma , United States . In 2000 the total population was 894.

The city is just two kilometers north of the Red River , the border with Texas . To the west of Ryan, Beaver Creek flows past the city. The US Highway 81 is the main traffic route through regional Ryans.

history

The place is named after Stephen W. Ryan, a farmer from the Quapaw people ( Arkansas ). He settled in the region from 1875 - at that time the area of ​​the Chickasaw tribe in Indian territory - and owned extensive land. His house, built around 1877, was the town's first residential building. The actual urban development began with the construction of a train station on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad in 1892, three years later a major fire nearly destroyed the young settlement. From 1906 to 1912 Ryan was briefly the county seat of Jefferson County before this function was relocated to Waurika by referendum . Ryan had the most inhabitants in 1920 with 1379 citizens. Since then the population has declined and finally fell below 900 inhabitants in the 2000 census.
