Ryan Cochrane (born October 29, 1988 in Victoria ) is a Canadian freestyle swimmer .

Ryan Cochrane starts for Island Swimming and is trained by Randy Bennet. He specializes in the freestyle middle distance from 400 to 1500 m. The Canadian had his international breakthrough in 2006 at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne , where he finished eighth over 400 m and fifth over 1500 m. Originally he was supposed to compete with his country's junior national team, but surprisingly he qualified for the major event. At the Pan Pacific Championships of the same year in his hometown of Victoria, he reached the finals in the three freestyle races from 400 to 1500 m. Over 400 m he finished seventh, over 1500 m he just missed a medal in fourth, over 800 m he won bronze. In Shanghai he also started at the Short Course World Championships, where the Canadian finished seventh over 1500 m. At the 2007 World Championships in Melbourne, Cochrane dropped out of the 400 and 1500 m already in the heats. He only reached the final over 800 m, where he was seventh.

In 2008, Cochrane started in Beijing at his first Olympic Games . On the 400 m course, he was eliminated in the preliminary run. The greatest success was winning the bronze medal behind the Tunisian Oussama Mellouli and Grant Hackett from Australia. At the Commonwealth Games 2010 in New Delhi , he won the 400 m freestyle and 1500 m freestyle. He did the same at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow .

Cochrane holds the Canadian records over 400, 800 and 1500 meters.
