Ryan Daniel Doherty (born February 2, 1984 in Toms River ) is an American beach volleyball and former baseball player .

Career

Doherty began his baseball career at Toms River East High School. He then studied at the University of Notre Dame and played on the university team as a pitcher . In 2010 Doherty, nicknamed “ Avatar ” because of his extraordinary height , switched to beach volleyball . On the AVP tour he played with changing partners for the first two years. In 2012 he formed a duo with Casey Patterson . A win against Olympic champions Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser attracted particular attention . In 2013 Doherty first played himself with Rogers. The duo started with a second place on the Continental Tour. At the Fuzhou Open and the Grand Slams of the FIVB World Tour in Corrientes and Rome , they each reached 17th place. At the 2013 World Championships in Stare Jabłonki , Rogers / Doherty also landed 17th. From October 2013 to September 2014, Nicholas was Lucena Doherty's partner. Best results from Doherty / Lucena on the 2014 World Tour were a second place at the Grand Slam in Berlin and a third place at the Grand Slam in Gstaad . In 2015 and 2016 he played with John Mayer . In 2017 Doherty formed a team with John Hyden . In 2018 he plays alongside Billy Allen .
