Ryan O'Reilly (born 1986 ) is a British singer-songwriter with Irish roots. He currently lives in Berlin .

life and work

O'Reilly has Irish parents but grew up in Southampton , England. He started playing the guitar at the age of 10. As a teenager, he first performed his musical creations on the open microphone in Toronto. Together with some other musician friends he was a street artist in London for a while . After he could be heard with his songs in various live shows in Europe and had gained a certain popularity in 2014 with his “Sofa Concerts” in Berlin , several radio stations also played. B. his songs from the 2015 EP Sometimes Things Just Happen . This led to his name being included in the SWR3's "pop dictionary".

In 2016 O'Reilly signed a record deal with Qatar's indie label "DNA Records". After his European tour with Lissie and his England tour with King Charles , which took place in the winter of 2016, he released his first studio album The Northern Line , which was recommended by Stern as "Music Tip of the Week". In November and December 2016, the singer performed with the Canadian rock band Arkells . In 2017, accompanied by the female folk trio The O'Pears from Toronto, he started his international church tour through Great Britain, Sweden and Germany.

O'Reilly also wrote songs for other musicians like Toronto singer Jadea Kelly .

Musical style

O'Reilly is known as a brilliant storyteller. The poetry of his songs is characterized by a special symbolism and black humor, whereby he is not afraid to reveal his own fears and openly express even unpleasant truths. His music is influenced by classic Americana , Irish folk and Heartland Rock . According to kontakt (Bamberg) his songs are inspired by Joe Strummer , Bob Dylan and Gillian Welch . His fragile, rough voice is underlined by the puristic instrumentation. The London Evening Standard wrote that the “Ryan O'Reilly Band”, which includes Tyler Kyte and David Granshaw, is the perfect counterbalance to “production line pop”. When O'Reilly played live with his band, people would be addressed through passion and poetics.
