The Rystraumen (also Storstraumen , Rya , Ryøystraumen and North Sami Rávdnji is) a narrow strait south-west of Tromsø in the Fylke (Province) Troms og Finnmark in Northern Norway , Norway . It is located in the municipality of Tromsø, at the eastern end of the Straumsfjord between the large island of Kvaløy in the north and mainland Norway in the south. It is named after the small island Ryøy in the middle of the sound .
The sound
A few kilometers before the Straumsfjord joins the Balsfjord in the east , the island Ryøy, about 2.1 km long and 0.9 km wide, divides it into two arms, the Storstraumen in the north and the Litjestraumen in the south of the island. Together the two arms are referred to as rystraumen , but this term is also used as a synonym for the storstraumen. The Litjestraumen is only 200 m wide and at its shallowest point less than 5 m deep. The Storstraumen, on the other hand, is about 500 m wide and more than 50 m deep in the middle and through it runs the main shipping route for coastal traffic between Harstad and Tromsø, which , coming from the Gisund , leads through the Straumsfjord to the Balsfjord and then on to Tromsø. Since the Straumsfjord west of Ryøy is considerably deeper and wider, the water pushes through the Rystraumen when the tide changes and reaches a speed of up to 6 knots at this narrow point , according to some information even up to 8 knots.
Ryatunnel
About 3 km east of the island, the 2675 m long two-lane Ryatunnel , which was released on September 29, 2011, runs under the eastern end of the sound with the Fv 858.
Marine reserve
Since September 2007, an area totaling 17 square kilometers in and on the Rystraumen has been a research and protection area of the category flow areas in the National Marine Protection Plan ( Nasjonal marin verneplan ), worthy of protection because of the remarkably rich sessile fauna ( sponges , cnidarians , mussels , Moss animals and sea squirts ).
