Ryøy (Norwegian Ryøya ) is an island in Straumsfjord about 15 km (linear) southwest of Tromso in the Fylke (Province) Troms og Finnmark in Northern Norway , Norway .

The island

The uninhabited, almost 2 km long and 1.43 km² large island is located in the area of ​​the municipality of Tromsø, near the eastern end of the Straumsfjord between the large island of Kvaløy in the north and the Norwegian mainland in the south. The Straumsfjord, which flows around it on both sides, is called " Rystraumen ", the 600 m wide northern arm between Ryøy and the large island Kvaløy as "Storstraumen", the only 200 m wide southern branch between Ryøy and the mainland Malangshalvøen peninsula as "Litjestraumen" referred to as.

Musk ox on Ryøy

The rocky island is hilly, up to 74 m high, and geologically consists mainly of mica gneiss , mica slate and dolomite . It is overgrown with pines , birches and heather .

A small herd of around 20 musk ox lives on the island, which is located there for research purposes by the Medical Faculty, Department of Arctic Biology, University of Tromsø . The animals roam freely on the island and, especially during the early autumn rutting season, you go to the island at your own risk.

Marine reserve

Since September 2007, an area totaling 17 square kilometers around the island has been a research and conservation area in the category of flow areas in the National Marine Protection Plan ( Nasjonal marin verneplan ) of Norway, worthy of protection because of the remarkably rich sessile fauna ( sponges ) in view of the strong currents in both arms of the Rystraum , Cnidarians , mussels , bog animals and sea ​​squirts ).

Ryatunnel

About 3 km east of the island, the 2675 m long, two-lane toll-based Ryatunnel , which was released on September 29, 2011, runs under the eastern end of the Straumsfjord with the Fv 858.
