Fidelis of Stotzingen

Fidelis Franz Wilhelm Freiherr von Stotzingen OSB (born May 1, 1871 Steißlingen , † January 9, 1947 in Rome ) was a German Roman Catholic clergyman and Benedictine . He was abbot of the Maria Laach monastery from 1901 to 1913 and abbot primate of the Benedictine Confederation from 1913 to 1947 .

Life

Fidelis Franz Wilhelm Freiherr von Stotzingen was born as the son of Roderich von Stotzingen . His mother Karoline was born Countess von Rechberg and Rothenlöwen . The couple had seven children, four sons and three daughters. Fideli's older brother Albrecht von Stotzingen was the Chamberlain of Baden and since the death of his father in 1893, a member of the First Chamber of the Baden Estates Assembly .

Stotzingen became a novice in the Benedictine Archabbey of Beuron in 1890, where he made profession on January 25, 1892 . In the same year, Frater Fidelis was sent to Rome to study theology and philosophy , where he was ordained a priest on September 29, 1897 and was awarded a doctorate in both subjects in 1898 . In 1899 Stotzingen first returned to his professed monastery in Beuron.

On October 31, 1901, Father Fidelis was elected Abbot of Maria Laach. The abbot was ordained on November 11, 1901 by the Bishop of Trier Michael Felix Korum . His motto was: Sursum ( Latin - upward ). On May 13, 1913, Stotzingen was elected coadjutor of the sick Abbot Primate Hildebrand de Hemptinne . After his death, Stotzingen was installed on August 13, 1913 as the second Abbot Primate of the Benedictine Confederation. He held this office until his death in 1947. His successor as Abbot Primate was Bernard Kälin .

Fidelis von Stotzingen died on January 9, 1947 at the age of 75 in Rome. He was buried in St. Anselmo on the Aventine .
