Ryu Han-su (born February 1, 1988 ) is a South Korean wrestler . In 2013 he became world champion in the Greco-Roman style lightweight .

Career

Ryu Han-su started wrestling as a teenager in 1999. He concentrated on the Greco-Roman style. As a sports student, he was a member of the Kyungsung University wrestling club. His trainers were or are Young Tae, Kim Jin-kyu, Park Chi-ho and Lee Jung-sub. Since completing his studies, he has been a member of the army and belongs to the Sangmu Seoul Association .

As a junior he was already very successful. In 2006 he was in Abu Dhabi Asian junior champion (Juniors) in the featherweight division . In the same year he took 3rd place at the Junior World Championships (Juniors) in Guatemala City in the same weight class behind Islambek Albijew , Russia and Soner Sucu, Turkey. In 2007 he came at the Junior World Championships (Juniors) in Beijing in featherweight behind Rahman Bilici, Turkey and Ibragim Labasanow, Russia, back on the 3rd place. In 2008 he was finally once again Asian junior champion (Juniors) in featherweight before Nurdaulet Jelmuratow, Kazakhstan and Bishroi Basilal, India.

The transition from top wrestler in junior age to top wrestler among seniors was not easy for Ryu Han-su. That is why he did not manage to qualify for participation in an international championship in South Korea between 2009 and 2012. But that was also due to the fact that the competition in your own country is very strong. Just mention Kim Min-chul and the 2012 Olympic champion Kim Hyeon-woo . When the latter switched from lightweight to welterweight in 2013 , the way to the South Korean national team of wrestlers in the Greco-Roman style was cleared for Ryu Han-su. He was then used in September 2013 at the World Championships in Budapest in the lightweight division, where he was excellently prepared. With victories over Sharur Wardanjan, Sweden, Matous Morbitzer, Czech Republic, Sandeep Yadav , India and Aleksandar Maksimović , Serbia, he made the jump to the final, in which he faced Islambek Albijew. In an even battle, in which both wrestlers had won a round, the Russian led just on points in the third round. About a minute before the end of the fight, Ryu Han-su was sent to the ground by the referee for being passive, giving Albiev a chance to take a hold and win the fight. Albijew did not use this grip, but complained to the referee several times in succession about the alleged illegal position of Ryu Han-su. The jury asked Albiev several times to continue the fight, when he still did not do so, he was disqualified and Ryu Han-su became world champion.

In April 2014 Ryu Han-su finished 3rd at the Asian Championships in Almaty in the lightweight category with three wins and one loss to Chusram Obloberdijew from Tajikistan. In September 2014 he also took part in the Asian Games in Incheon / South Korea. Participation in these games was extremely important for all South Korean athletes, so that many decided not to start at the World Cup. So did Ryu Han-su. He was successful for this in Incheon and won there in the lightweight before Ryūtarō Matsumoto from Japan, Ri Hak-won from North Korea and Afschin Bjabangard from Iran.

In May 2015 he was Asian lightweight champion in Doha ahead of Mohammadali Abdolhami Geraei from Iran. In the heavily occupied World Cup 2015 in Las Vegas defeated Ryu Han-su in lightweight Zheng Pan, China, Artem Surkov , Russia, Marius Thommesen from Norway, Dominik Etlinger from Croatia and Mihran Harutyunyan from Armenia and only lost in the final against Frank Stäbler from Germany. He became vice world champion behind Stäbler.
