Saxon Mt. Everest stair marathon
The Saxon Mt. Everest Stair Marathon is an extreme sports event that has existed since 2005 on the Spitzhaus staircase in Radebeul - Oberlößnitz . A report on the website of the German Ultramarathon Association describes the run as "the heaviest and largest extreme stair run in the world". In particular, the 39,700 steps to be mastered define the event as a flight of stairs ( ultra flight of stairs ), comparable at most to the 11,674 steps on the longest flight of stairs in the world along the Niesenbahn in Switzerland , where the second longest, but pure flight of stairs takes place every year. In addition, in Radebeul, international participants from 13 nations to date will complete the vertical meters of the eponymous Mount Everest in up to 24 hours (8,848 meters in 100 laps), which is in addition to the distance covered by an ultramarathon (84.4 kilometers). Previously, if requested, a correspondingly powerful starter, but since 2015 as a controlled route, the ultra marathon is carried out as a 24-hour run . The former title holder Kurt Hess from Switzerland covered 144 laps during this time in 2007, which corresponds to a running distance of over 120 kilometers and an altitude distance of over 12,700 meters (57,168 steps). At the 11th edition in 2015, Munich's Andreas Allwang clearly surpassed this record with 156 laps (equivalent to 13,800 meters in altitude).
The runs
- On the 7th Radebeul Spitzhaus staircase, which on 16./17. In April 2011, 700 runners took part. The 8th stair marathon took place on 21./22. April 2012, it was attended by participants from 7 nations. Four new records were set in 2012. The fastest runner in 2012, Sepp Schreiber, undercut the five-year record set by his compatriot Kurt Hess by over an hour, and the second, Andreas Allwang (D), also undercut the previous course record. In 2012, 28 men and 7 women, more than half of the competitors starting alone, made it through the 100 rounds. It is noteworthy that the last placed in the 2012 invitation run of the Elf Freunde , nine comrades of the THW Vs. Fire brigade , contested their race in operational clothing and under respiratory protection .
- The 9th stair marathon took place on 20./21. April 2013. Two records were set: The first-placed woman in the individual starters, Kristina Tille, set a new women's best time for the 100 laps with 17:30:22. The season of the Lößnitzgymnasium improved the tourist time to under 11 hours (10:59:35). In the head-to-head race against the neighboring Luisenstift-Gymnasium, the Lößnitzgymnasium now has seven first places and two second places in nine events, followed by the Luisenstift high school with two first places and five second places. In 2013, five participants registered to complete the 24-hour run. The first place (tenth place on 100 laps) completed a total of 115 laps in 23:53:37. The rescue team of the Radebeul fire brigade also started again wearing respiratory protection and completed the eleven laps of the invitation run in less than 2 hours 5 minutes.
- The 10th stair marathon took place on 12./13. April 2014. Two records were set: The first woman in the individual starters, Ulrike Baars, who placed in one of the first two places for the sixth time, set a new best time for women in the 100 laps with 17:06:59. And managed 114 laps in the 24-hour race. The fastest runner, Andreas Allwang, won with 13:26:53. The fire brigade had invited across Germany to tackle the tourist route in 2014 with more than 100 participants in operational clothing and under heavy breathing protection. The first 100 firefighters made the distance, which they contested out of competition because of their respiratory protection handicap, in about 7:30 p.m. To mark the tenth anniversary of the sporting event, a Dresden runner celebrated his own anniversary: Alexander Helbig was the only runner to complete all ten Spitzhaus staircases with 100 laps.
- For the 11th stair marathon (April 18/19, 2015) the regulations were slightly changed. The winner of the soloists was the starter who completed the most runs within 24 hours; Men and women were honored separately. A separate award for the fastest completion of 100 laps was also given. The fire brigade team wearing heavy respiratory protection and operational clothing completed 117 laps in 23:31:16 during the 24-hour run.
- The 14th stair marathon took place on 21./22. April 2018. After a long break in Radebeul, the winner of the first three competitions started again alone from 2005 to 2007, Kurt Hess from Switzerland, and was awarded the starting number 1 as an honor. An additional feature in the race were his two different running shoes with which he then secured second place and all that at the age of 65! The heat was extreme, because hardly a cloud adorned the blue sky on both days and provided a little shade. So you also had to think of a good sunscreen. Later in the cool night, some of the runners took a longer break or even slept a little on the camp beds provided. Others, on the other hand, kept walking at a somewhat slower pace, patiently waiting for the first birds chirping from the vineyard. With dawn over the Spitzhaus it soon became clear that there were hard hours ahead of the runners and, above all, that it would be very warm before the finish in the afternoon. Again it was necessary to adjust his body to the expected heat. Every runner had his own special recipe and good helpers on the route, who at the right time handed the cooling sponge with water, the very special food and drinks to refuel. And again round after round. Among the women, Radebeul's Katrin Jeschke, who came second in the end, was particularly noticeable, as she had the strength to have a little chat with the numerous spectators even on Sunday afternoon. She smiled convincingly into the camera shortly before the finish line after 24 hours. The celebrated winner Carmen Henker was only one lap ahead in the end. Firefighters in operational clothing and with heavy breathing protection have now become a good tradition among the participants of the eleven friends . Again and again there was spontaneous applause when such a runner was spotted or had just taken the last steps of the stairs. Also this year the tourist relay teams, which make the race more colorful, and the three - man ropes on the stairs were to be found.
Idea and goal setting
The idea for the run came about during a visit to the Panometer in Leipzig with the exhibition 8848Everest360 ° . Since flights of stairs have been carried out on the Spitzhaus staircase since the year 2000 ( Spitzhaus staircase ), a wealth of experience was available for the new task. The organizers received support from the city of Radebeul , the local fire brigades , the local association of the technical relief organization , the DLRG Meißen, the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund and private helpers.
Until 2011 participants from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, United Arab Emirates, Mexico, USA, Israel, Luxembourg and Belgium competed in the international competition. For 2012, competitors from the United Kingdom, Sweden and Poland had also registered. In 2013 the first participant from Romania joined.
While going it alone is reserved for 60 international competitors (48 men and 9 women in 2012), some of whom are fighting for World Cup points, the 15 three-person ropes and 5 tourist teams with up to 100 participants each offer popular sport . Among them are well-known names: In 2011, the Saxon regional bishop Jochen Bohl was part of the team of Kinderarche Sachsen , which took part as a tourist team. On the square in front of the children's ark landed the cultural relay of the state theaters of Saxony , consisting of "artists of the state theaters of Saxony , the Staatskapelle Dresden , the Dresden Philharmonic , the Dresden State Operetta , students of the Dresden University of Music and culture enthusiasts, friends, acquaintances and relatives of the musicians of the orchestra State theaters of Saxony. ”In 2010, for example, the Mayor of Radebeul Bert Wendsche was part of the Children's Ark team, while State Bishop Bohl was part of the local Lions Club team.
route
It leads the runners starting on the forecourt of the Bismarck Tower in Radebeul , past the pavilion at the top of the Spitzhaus staircase, down to the gate of the Am Goldenen Wagen vineyard , right across the street at the Goldenen Wagen to the place where the Hoflößnitzstraße crosses. Here you turn around and the route goes up again to the upper turn on the forecourt.
Out of consideration for the historic sandstone stairs, the use of spikes or sticks is prohibited. The staircase that overcomes the steep slope of the Lößnitz has a slope angle of 36.2%, including the platforms , and the entire half-way of the ascent from the turning point to the destination of 21%. Due to its course in a cut in the Lausitz Fault , which leads from the Dresden Elbe valley widening to the Lausitzer Platte near Wahnsdorf , the slope of the stairs is much flatter than the fall line of the terraced vineyards on both sides.
The event is received as "the European highlight of the month [April], the first significant outdoor event of the year [... which] has already achieved cult status and attracts a special clientele." The "most extreme flight of stairs in the world" is already " Fully booked months before the competition ”, but“ an inquiry with the organizer can still be worthwhile: Most of the time there are still places available in the relays or in a group of three. ”Otherwise, there is only hope of moving up from the waiting list. Participation in the race counts within the annual Towerrunning World Cup .
Regulations
The race lasted over 100 laps on the above-mentioned route until 2014 and there were 24 hours available. The race has lasted 24 hours since 2015; in addition, the 100-lap results are stopped. All runners who completed the 100 laps within the 24 hours will be immortalized in a club of the 100s .
The three starting classes are divided as follows:
Go it alone
Each participant (men / women) runs the 24 hours or 100 laps alone, whereby it is up to him how he divides the race.
The three-party team
A team consists of three participants (mixed possible), who divide the 100 rounds. It should be noted that each participant must run at least 25 laps and 18 hours of time must be undercut.
The tourists
A team, consisting of at least 75 participants (mixed possible) until 2014, takes the route under its feet and has 16 hours for it. Since 2015, only 50 laps have been completed by 50 participants.
Eleven friends
In addition to the three starting classes, there is an invitation race for sponsors and helpers of the event: eleven participants each run one lap and have 2 hours to do it.
