geography

Süderschmedebyfeld is located in the northern part of the community Sieverstedt , Amt Oeversee , Schleswig-Flensburg district. In the western part, Süderschmedebyfeld is bounded by the federal highway 76 , or the old road from Flensburg to Schleswig . To the north of Süderschmedebyfeld lies the Frörupholz settlement and the Frörup mountains .

The landscape of Süderschmedebyfeld is shaped by the transition from the hilly terminal moraine landscape of fishing (which was created during the Saale Ice Age and the Vistula Ice Age ) to the landscape of the Geest . This transitional landscape is known by the population as Luus fishing . The Dingwaterau and Ballbek brooks flow through Süderschmedebyfeld and flow into the Treene .

Süderschmedebyfeld is located in the area of the major nature conservation project Obere Treenelandschaft .

history

Due to the proximity to the ancient Jutian trunk road, the Ochsenweg , there are a large number of traces of settlement. Remains of an old urn cemetery have been found in the Ballbek district. The scattered settlement Süderschmedebyfeld belongs together with the town center Süderschmedeby to the parish of Sieverstedt . The Sieverstedter St. Petri Church, one of the oldest and most beautiful stone churches in the Schleswig region, was built around 1100 AD.

The name Süderschmedeby refers to the history as a blacksmith village and the iron smelting with the blast furnaces and blacksmith shops, which was already of great importance here during the Roman Empire after the birth of Christ. The reason for the settlement of this early heavy industry was the most important lawn iron ore deposit of fishing.

A large number of slag finds on Hoogebarg, which has meanwhile been destroyed by gravel mining, indicate that the lawn iron ore smelting of Süderschmedeby, which gives it its name, also took place in the Süderschmedebyfeld area. During the construction of the Autobahn 7 , a layer containing lawn iron ore was found in Norderholz, west of Süderschmedebyfeld. The mining was stopped in the first centuries after Christ, because the entire surrounding area was already deforested by the smelting and the transport routes for the fuel wood were simply too long.

The old military roads from north to south ( Ochsenweg ) have shaped the area to this day. A modern road network connects the municipality with the district town of Schleswig and with the regional center of Flensburg and roughly follows the historical trunk road routes.

The special location on the Ochsenweg is also evident from the high number of burial mounds, most of which were deliberately removed and plowed over over the centuries. Only near Trollkjers in Norderholz have two former burial mounds been preserved. On the northern edge of the Hoogebarg, an urn field with over 200 urns was discovered by a farmer when a fallow land was reclaimed between the gravel mining area and the Ballbek in the 1950s.

In the 1920s, in Süderschmedebyfeld, as in Frörupsand, gravel mining (the gravel is a legacy of the last Ice Age, see Sander ). Most of the material extracted was used to build the Hindenburg dam. The remains of the spoil heaps and the embankments of the lorries that transported the material to the station in Tarp can still be seen in the landscape. A sad result of the gravel mining, in addition to the destruction of the landscape, is the use of the gravel pits as landfills. One of the former gravel pits was used as a landfill for decades, a second landfill could only be prevented by extreme resistance from the residents in the 1980s.

The existing closed Siebrested landfill is located in the middle of the major nature conservation project Obere Treenelandschaft . The nature conservation association Obere Treenelandschaft specifically purchases agricultural land in Süderschmedebyfeld in order to enable near-natural pasture management through the sheep farm affiliated to the association.

In January 1971, the representatives of the formerly independent municipalities of Sieverstedt, Stenderup near Havetoft and Süderschmedeby (with Süderschmedebyfeld) decided to merge to carry out a local election on the day of the state elections in April 1971. This measure came into force on April 1, 1971.

coat of arms

There was never a separate coat of arms for districts. Even the coat of arms of the municipality of Sieverstedt was only created in 2004. The anvil in the coat of arms of the municipality of Sieverstedt symbolizes the history of the districts Süderschmedeby and Süderschmedebyfeld as a forge and ore processing village of the Iron Age.

Religions

Like the entire region, Süderschmedebyfeld is predominantly Protestant.

politics

Süderschmedebyfeld provides no own councilors in council of the municipality Sieverstedt . Süderschmedebyfeld's interests are taken care of by the community council members from Süderschmedeby. Individual farms in Süderschmedebyfeld belong to the Danish minority.

The train connection is via the Tarp stop on the Hamburg-Flensburg line and via Sörup on the Flensburg-Kiel line. Public transport (local public transport) is handled by an hourly bus service that runs north and south.

Established businesses

Only a few farms still work in Süderschmedebyfeld, which are the only local economic settlement. Due to the continued purchase of land by the Obere Treenelandschaft nature conservation association, agricultural operations are further restricted. In addition to agriculture, tourism is the largest source of income for the residents of Süderschmedebyfeld.

Public facilities and utilities

The former dirt roads in Süderschmedebyfeld have been paved for several decades. The private wells were banned and all residents were connected to the public water network. There has also been electricity and telephone in Süderschmedebyfeld since the mid-1950s. DSL connections are not planned throughout. Süderschmedeby directs its wastewater into the Ballbek.

Educational institutions

The Sieverstedt primary and secondary school was built in 1971. The original village school Süderschmedeby, which also supplied Süderschmedebyfeld, has merged into the community primary school (4 classes) Sieverstedt. The secondary school in Tarp and the grammar schools in Flensburg, Schleswig and Satrup (Mittelangeln) cover the children's school needs.

The small children go to a two-tier kindergarten in Sieverstedt, which was built in 1994.
