Sād ( Arabic صاد, DMG Ṣād ) is the 14th letter of the Arabic alphabet . It emerged from the Phoenician Sade and is therefore related to the Greek San (no longer used today) and the Hebrew Tzade . There is no direct equivalent in the Latin alphabet. The numerical value 90 is assigned to it.
Sound value and transcription
The sad belongs to the four so-called emphatic sounds and has no equivalent in German. The articulation point is the same as in Sin (= voiceless "s"), but the speaking apparatus is slightly tense and the back part of the tongue is raised towards the roof of the mouth. In the DMG inscription, Sad is represented with a dotted s (ṣ). In non-scientific transliteration, “s” is mostly used, whereby the distinction from Sin is lost.
The Sad is a sun letter , that is, a preceding al- (definite article) is assimilated .
