Sœur Sourire - The Singing Nun [ ˌsœʁ suˈrir ] (Original title: Sœur Sourire) is a Belgian-French feature film from 2009 by Stijn Coninx . The biographical film is based freely on the life of the Belgian nun Jeannine Deckers, who became known under the name Sœur Sourire .

The film was shot from July 28 to September 20, 2008 at locations in Liège , Seraing and Esneux , among others .

The film had its world premiere on April 23, 2009 in Paris.

In Brussels in the late 1950s, the Walloon baker's daughter Jeannine Deckers rebelled against the crampedness of her middle-class home. Instead of getting married and taking over the family business, she decides to go to the Dominican monastery and become a nun. There the Mother Superior encourages her to be musically active. Unexpectedly, her song Dominique became a worldwide hit and Jeannine became famous as Sœur Sourire ( German : sister of the smile ).

The success leads to Jeannine falling into a deep crisis of faith and leaving her religious community in order to build on her success as a chanson singer with provocative lyrics. However, she cannot live from her music.

When she also got problems with taxes and her lesbian relationship was spread by the press, she decided to commit suicide with her great love Annie.

Soeur Sourire is not the first biographical film about the life of Jeannine Deckers: The film Dominique - The Singing Nun with Debbie Reynolds in the leading role was produced as early as 1966 under the direction of Henry Koster .
