The locomotives of the SŽD series ТЭ3Л (German transcription TE 3L ) of the Soviet Railways (SŽD) were wide-gauge experimental diesel locomotives primarily for freight train service. They can be described as locomotives with the locomotive body of the 2ТЭ10Л but still with the drive system of the ТЭ3 . A mass production of the locomotive did not materialize, it also had the project name ТЭ20 .

prehistory

The large-scale production of the ТЭ3 diesel locomotive with around 500 sections in the Luhansk locomotive factory from the beginning of the 1960s brought enough arguments about its modernization. The United Ministries of the USSR drew up Resolutions No. 639 (of July 15, 1959) and No. 743 (of July 19, 1960), which contained the mandate to revise the ТЭ3 .

These projects were adopted by the Kharkov Locomotive Factory and the Luhansk Locomotive Factory and created different work projects . The project of the Kharkov locomotive factory envisaged a fundamental modernization of the locomotive body, which provided a self-supporting construction similar to that of the 2ТЭ10 . In addition, a new diesel generator unit was planned, creating a test locomotive with the designation ТЭ30 .

In contrast to this variant, the Luhansk locomotive factory only reworked the locomotive body with replacement of the length and construction (with load-bearing frame). The project name was ТЭ20 .

delivery

In 1961, the Luhansk Locomotive Factory delivered the first test two-section locomotive, and was given the full designation ТЭ3Л.001 ( TE3L.001 ).

Regardless of the external differences to the previous locomotive, the new diesel locomotive was 80% standardized with it, in this case also in terms of the main dimensions. For the Т bestehend3Л ( TE3L ), the power unit, consisting of the diesel engine 6Д100 ( 6D100 ) and the traction generator ГП-307 ( GP-307 ), both produced by the Kharkov locomotive factory and the Kharkov electric motor plant , was used. This power unit was also used in the ТЭ30 of the Kharkov locomotive factory and was 4,200 kg lighter than the original power unit of the ТЭ3 ( TE3 ). Only in contrast to the ТЭ30 ( TE30 ), the ТЭ3Л ( TE3L ) used the traction motors ЭД-104 ( ED-104 ) as in the locomotives of the ТЭ10 series , they had an output of 258 kW each. According to the factory, four sections (two diesel locomotives) of the ТЭ3Л ( TE3L ) series were manufactured in 1961 . According to WA Rakow , only the ТЭ3Л.002 ( TE3L.002 ) was delivered to the SŽD in 1962 , so it can be assumed that the diesel locomotive ТЭ3Л.003 ( TE3L.003 ) remained in the factory.

Fate of the diesel locomotives

The ТЭ3Л.001 ( TE3L.001 ) was originally delivered to the Donetskaya schelesnaja doroga , only the machine was soon passed on to the Yuzhnye schelesnyje dorogi with the second locomotive ТЭ3Л.002 ( TE3L.002 ) . The locomotives did not run there for a long time, from 1963 to 1964 they returned to the Donezka Salisnyzja in the Debaltseve locomotive depot .

Although the locomotives were a lot lighter than the ТЭ3 , they were not much preferred in operational service. For this reason, the locomotive factory Luhansk developed the locomotive 2Т mit10Л with a power of 2 × 3000 HP (2206 kW) with all its might in the mid-1960s . It is interesting that these locomotives had the same set as the ТЭ3Л ( TE3L ).

The test diesel locomotives of the series ТЭ3Л ( TE3L ) were deleted from the inventory lists in 1968.
