The ЭД9 ( ED9 ) is a multiple unit built by Maschinenfabrik Demichowo , which is used specifically in suburban traffic in Russia and the successor states of the former USSR . It was originally intended for the Rīgas Vagonbūves Rūpnīca as a class ЭР27 ( ER27 ) multiple unit with a box length of 21.5 m as a design of a corresponding family of wagons. Ultimately, it was built as the ЭД9 ( ED9 ) series at the Demichowo machine factory. It can be described as the alternating current version of the SŽD series ЭД2 , which appeared in 1992. From the ЭД9M ( ED9M ) onwards, the vehicles were very similar to the RŽD series ЭД4 .

The electric trains of the ЭД9 ( ED9 ) series, starting with the ЭД9T ( ED9T ), were very similar to the SŽD series ЭД2 when they were built, only they were intended for operation under 25 kV AC 50 Hz. As of 2014, a total of 299 vehicles were built, from the series Д9Т ( ED9T ) 27 vehicles with the inventory numbers 0001–0027, from the series ЭД9M ( ED9M ) and series ЭД9MK ( ED9MK ) 239 vehicles with the inventory numbers 0028-0267, and from the series ЭД9Э ( ED9E ) 32 vehicles with the inventory numbers 0001–0032.

Description of the ЭД9Т

From the electric trains of the series ЭД9Т ( ED9T ), 27 vehicles were delivered as 8 or 10-car units. They had inventory numbers from 0001 to 0027 . Nowadays the series is no longer delivered. Vehicles with inventory number 0028 are delivered as series ЭД9M ( ED9M ) or ЭД9MK ( ED9MK ). The electric trains are equipped with the recuperation brake.

In addition, from 1999 30 sidecars of the same type with the designation ЭД9Т.3001 ( ED9T.3001 ) to ЭД9Т.3030 ( ED9T.3030 ) were delivered. These vehicles were not intended for the multiple units, they were used for trains, each consisting of ten cars and two locomotives of the series SŽD series ВЛ80 or SŽD series 2ТЭ10В at the ends. They were used on the railways in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast . After the units had been replaced by multiple units of the RA2 series , the sidecars were taken to the Kirow depot , and the diesel locomotives continued to be used in the shunting and export service.

The boxes of the car and the bogies of electric trains ЭД9M / ЭД9MK ( EД9M / ED9MK ) are analogous to those of multiple units ЭД4M for the DC - operation. Externally, the two vehicles are almost indistinguishable from each other. Inside, the ЭД9M / ЭД9MK ( EД9M / ED9MK ) had cabinets on delivery in which the high-voltage equipment was housed. At the moment, the electrical equipment of the vehicles is being rebuilt, which means that there are no lockers and instead the number of seats is increased.

The multiple units are equipped with a recuperation brake . The design of the cars enables operation on lines with both high and low platforms . Compared to the ЭД9Т ( ED9T ), the vehicles of the ЭД9M / ЭД9MK ( EД9M / ED9MK ) series have the following advantages and design features;

  • 17% higher passenger capacity,
  • greater power of the traction drive motors,
  • The design of the driver's cab is more comfortable, in accordance with the ergonomic requirements of the time ,
  • Possibility of creating trains with even and odd numbers of cars by using additional sidecars,
  • a new architecture of the head part with enlarged windows increases the durability. Electronic elements are used, windshield wipers with electric drive, windscreen washer systems, final signals of a new design, combined in one block, are used. In addition, the headlights have reduced dimensions with a more effective effect.

  • There is an indexing block in the driver's cab. It displays information about faults and inflammations in the car and enables voice messages in the car.

A large selection of the delivered units enabled the repair effort to be reduced. At the same time, the operating and repair costs could be reduced by the number of less used motor vehicles with the same length and number of seats for the entire train. With the production of cars with a length of 21.5 m, a 9-car train of the ЭД9M / ЭД9MK ( EД9M / ED9MK ) could replace a complete ten-car train of the series ЭР9 . By using the electric train with wide entry doors and large vestibules, a more favorable flow of traffic for suburban traffic was also possible. The entry and exit times could be reduced by 40%.

The series ЭД9M ( ED9M ) was intended for suburban traffic , the modification ЭД9MK ( ED9MK ) was intended for transport in high comfort (express connections). ЭД9M ( ED9M ) and ЭД9MK ( ED9MK ) had consecutive numbering.

In 2006 a test train consisting of nine cars with the designation ЭД9Э.0001 was produced. The train had a complete set of energy storage equipment, which enabled more economical operation. At the beginning of 2010, the vehicle was transferred to the Rostov depot of the North Caucasus Railway for permanent operation.

An important advantage of the ЭД9Э.0001 was the equipment with the energy-saving complex of electrical equipment with the designation КЭО-25 ( KEO-25 ), the converter of the type ВИП-1000 ( WIP-1000 ) and the microprocessor -controlled management of the power drive , it supplied the smooth regulation of the voltage of the traction electric drive motors. The recuperation brake could be used until the train stopped completely. The microprocessor control and the recuperation brake enabled energy savings of 20% to 25% when the train was in operation.

In 2012 the renewed electric train ЭД9Э.0002 was delivered. The vehicle has leaning sliding doors for exiting low-height platforms . It is fully air-conditioned and has elements of video observation. The control cars have enlarged anteroom and toilet rooms and equipment for people with restricted mobility, similar to the ЭД4M ( ED4M ) from inventory number 0500 . The train is also equipped with a new system of fire and alarm signaling. The front part of the control car is equipped with a 20-character train destination display.

From 2013 the vehicles (with the inventory number 0028 to 0032 ) were equipped with a new cab for the machinist, analogous to the vehicles ЭД4M ( ED4M ) from the inventory number 0500 . But in contrast to the last ones, the ЭД9Э used corrugated side plates. Some of the trains were used in Kazakhstan .
