The ЭД4 ( ED4 ) is a multiple unit of the Rossijskije schelesnyje dorogi built by the Demichowo machine factory , which is used specifically in suburban traffic. It belongs to a series of electric multiple units for direct current drive with a recuperation brake and a body length of 22,056 mm. It was built on the basis of the ЭД2T . With all modifications, a total of 475 vehicles were produced from 1996 to mid-2014.


The vehicles were created as a result of the political changes in the CIS countries in the 1990s. The predecessor vehicle ЭД2T was manufactured with electrical equipment from the Riga electrical machine works in Latvia . The ЭД4 (ED4), on the other hand, was built in 1996 at the Demichowo machine factory , whereby emphasis was placed on the use of electrical equipment from Russian production. The mechanical part and the box were taken over from the ЭД2T . The electrical equipment, however, was derived from the proven SŽD series ЭР22 from 1964.

The electric traction motors were manufactured in the electrical machine plant in Novosibirsk , the rest of the electrical equipment comes from the Novocherkassk electric locomotive factory . The new electric train was given the designation ЭД4 (ED4). The new train was created for the large-scale replacement of the SŽD series ЭР2 . This train was also created as a derivative of the ЭР29 , which is considered to be the forefather of this railcar family. Compared to the SŽD series ЭР2 it differed in the enlarged passenger compartment and the wider door recess (1250 mm). That accelerated the flow of passengers. Semi-soft seats in the 2 + 2 and 3 + 3 arrangement were installed in the passenger compartment; these consisted of two variations; once with a dense cover made of artificial cover or with a cover made of plastic with a soft cover.

The first multiple unit in the series was completed in 1996 and consisted of six wagons. On March 13, 1997 inspection trips were carried out on the track ring of the ВНИИЖТ (German: WNISCHT ). The main characteristics of the train largely corresponded to the ЭД2T electric train . Fast- acting switches of the type БВ-11 ( GW-11 ) were still used in this vehicle . As these no longer complied with the legal requirements, the БВП-105А ( GWP-105A ) type from the Riga electrical machine works was used in the first vehicle of the ЭД4 (ED4) . After completing the inspections on the track ring, the vehicle was handed over to the test operation at the Mineralnye Vody depot of Severo-Kawkasskaya zhelesnaja doroga . Later the factory changed to the production of the electric train ЭД4M (ED4M) with a changed driver's cab, this modification had a continuous numbering with the ЭД4. After the first ЭД4M vehicles from 1997, the Demichowo machine factory produced five more electric trains of the original ЭД4 design, which did not differ in appearance from the first vehicle in the series. In 1997 the multiple unit with the inventory number 0005 appeared as a 10-wagon unit, in 1998 the vehicles with the inventory numbers 0006 and 0007 as a 10-wagon unit and the multiple unit with the inventory number 0010 (6-wagon unit) and with the inventory number 0014 ( 8-car unit).

The first multiple unit of the series was operated in the Mineralnye Vody depot of the Severo-Kawkasskaya zheleznaja doroga on the Mineralnye Vody - Kislovodsk section . In 2007 it was given to the Great Railway Ring in Moscow . There he received the Alexandrov depot and has served there to this day. The remaining trains of the series ЭД4, with the exception of those with inventory numbers 0007 and 0010, were given to the Pererwa depot of the Moskovskaya seleznaja doroga for servicing the lines to Kursk . The ЭД4.0007 was transferred from the factory to the Belgorod depot , the ЭД4.0010 to the Mineralnye Vody depot, and later it was transferred to the Tuapse depot .

In 1997 the first three electric trains of this series based on the ЭД4 (ED4) were delivered; the vehicles ЭД4M with the inventory numbers 0002 , 0003 and 0004 . Compared to the original version, the trains had completely new driver's cabs with a different head shape. This was drawn up on the basis of an analysis of the trends in the formation of shapes for vehicles in the domestic and foreign industries. The cabs of the new trains had a number of construction differences from those of the original version;

  • enlarged dimensions of the front windows of the cabins;
  • Use of electric windscreen wipers;
  • Use of spotlights of smaller dimensions with an effective reflection effect;
  • the engine driver's cab has improved operating options, increased thermal insulation and the use of flame-retardant materials;
  • Discrete anti-skid control devices were used on all wagons , which were later removed;
  • electronic systems have been installed to signal ignition and defects;
  • the driver's seats have increased vibration resistance;
  • Non-combustible materials were also used in the passenger compartments.

The first electric trains of the series were delivered to the Pererwa depot of the Moskovskaya seleznaja doroga . In 1998 the ЭД4M.0004 went through a control check on the track ring of the ВНИИЖТ (German: WNISCHT ). The complete electrical equipment from the production of the Novocherkassk electric locomotive factory was used on the ЭД4M electric trains , the traction electric drive motors were used in parts from the Soviet or from the production of the Riga electric machine works , the fast-acting switches come from the production of the Novocherkassk electric locomotive works and the Riga electric machine works .

The Demichowo machine factory also manufactured electric trains on the basis of the ЭД4M, in which instead of the electrical equipment from the Novocherkassk electric locomotive factory, those from the production of the Riga electric machine works were used, as it worked more reliably. These trains were given the designation ЭД4M 1 and had inventory numbers 0008 , 0009 and 0011 . In 2000 the Электросила ( Elektrokraft ) plant produced the first set of electrical equipment for electric trains for alternating current called derД9M , which was practically an analogy to the ЭД4M for alternating current. From that moment on, the general introduction of electrical equipment from this company began. From 2001 onwards, the fast-acting switches for electric trains were also manufactured by the Электросила ( Elektrokraft ) works , they were analogous to those produced by the Riga electric machine works .

Up to the present day, the Demichowo machine factory has delivered 480 trains of the modifications ЭД4M, ЭД4M 1 , ЭД4MK and ModД4Э, and their series production continues. Likewise, a significant number of electrical sections were also made for the possibility of replacing damaged cars, the control cars were given the numbers 1001 and higher, the motor cars the numbers 2001 and higher and the sidecars the numbers 3001 and higher.

The electric trains that were delivered from 2007 (inventory number from 182 on) had a new cladding of the passenger compartment with noise insulation and new fixed glazing. This brought a significant increase in the driving comfort of the car. However, the air circulation in these vehicles was significantly impaired and there was no ventilation in the vestibules. From 2010 onwards, air purification systems were installed in the passenger compartments, dividing the circuits for heating and cooling. This allowed automatic regulation and support of the temperature in the passenger compartments. Special ventilation systems were used in the vestibules. The windows in the new electric cars were also replaced. This also increased the flow of fresh air to the passenger compartment.

Contemporary seating blocks are used in the passenger areas. In the upper part of the ceiling, uninterrupted strips of light with fluorescent lamps were installed; they provided uniform illumination of the room without the effect of the flashing lamps . In addition to the lighting elements, loudspeakers and transmitters for fire signaling were installed in the light strips.

The vehicles are equipped with external leaning sliding doors with automatic door blocking. They ensure that the car body is hermetically sealed , preventing the doors from opening while driving. The transitions from car to car have also been designed to be hermetically sealed; they ensure a safe and convenient transition from one car to another, completely protected from interference from the outside environment. In addition, they also have no intermediate doors.

The video monitoring systems in the passenger compartments allow the events to be recorded and displayed in real time. The information is displayed on the driver's desk. The use of an air conditioning system requires an increased consumption of electrical energy. This is ensured by an electrical machine converter, which delivers 31% more power than analog systems. In addition, the train is equipped with an on-board system of the technical condition of the vehicles called КОМПАКС-ЭКСПРЕСС-3 ( Kompaks-Express-3 ). The system is connected to the vehicle's line network and provides operational information to the nearest depot staff, who are responsible for diagnosing the electric trains.

The ease of movement of the trains is ensured by the БСУ-ТМ ( BSU-TM ) type intermediate car coupling . This also ensures a close coupling of the vehicles.

The first trains of the series were deployed in the Pererwa depot of the Moskovskaya zhelesnaja doroga , where they still work to this day. Later the trains were assigned to other directions of the Moskovskaya zhelesnaja doroga (preferably on the direction Ryazan , Yaroslavl and Nizhny Novgorod ) as well as on other railways in Russia . In Ukraine , an electric train was used in Yasynuwata in Donetsk Oblast .

In 2012 the ЭД4M electric trains received a new design with a mask of the control car . This design is also used today in the ЭД9Э series electric trains. In addition, the ЭД9M electric trains were delivered, which differ from the ЭД4M only in the other voltage system with 25 kV 50 Hz alternating current .

In September 2011, a section of the ЭД4M-0500 electric train was exhibited at the Expo-1520 exhibition. These vehicles have a new exterior and a number of technical improvements. The most noticeable difference of the electric train is the changed shape of the driver's cab made of GRP from the manufacturer НПП РОСТ ( NPP ROST ), the smooth side walls with new windows from the company КМТ , the improvement of the leaning sliding doors, the hermetically sealed intermediate car transition , the close coupling device between the cars and a closed one Toilet system. In 2012 an 8-car train was delivered, from 2013 the standard inspection was carried out, which was successfully completed with the presentation of the certificate. At the beginning of October 2014, the delivery of analog trains with inventory number 0501 and higher began.

The first unit ЭД4M-0500 came into operation from May 2014, the second ЭД4M-0501 from December 2014. The trains were designed by the company Zentral PKK and were used on the Moskovskaya zhelesnaja doroga in the direction of Nizhny Novgorod in Sputnik on the Moscow - Balaschicha and Moscow - Zelesnodorozhnaya lines .

ЭД4M 1

The electrical equipment originally used for the ЭД4M from the Novocherkassk electric locomotive factory and the Sibstankoelektroprivod company provoked a large number of allegations at the motor vehicle depots. In connection with this, the Demichowo machine factory produced three electric trains in 1998, which were given the designation ЭД4M 1 (ED4M 1 ) and inventory numbers 0008 , 0009 and 0011 . Its mechanical construction and the exterior of the vehicles were the same as those of the ЭД4M (ED4M), only instead of the electrical equipment from the Novocherkassk electric locomotive factory, the complex electrical equipment from the Riga electrical machine works was used. The project name was ЭД2М ( ED2M ).

In 1999–2000 the first series of electric trains of the ЭД4M series for increased comfort was produced on behalf of the Moskovskaya zhelesnaja doroga . This means the abbreviation K after the series designation. These trains were soon delivered in series with the ЭД4M (ED4M) together with common numbering. Except for the more comfortable passenger compartment, they had no major design differences to the ЭД4M. The first unit consisted of five 1st class wagons, three 2nd class wagons and two 3rd class wagons.

The passenger compartments of the cars had the following facilities:

  • In the 1st class wagons, seats in the arrangement 2 + 2 were furnished in a soft design, and a table was placed between the seats. There are televisions and videos in the passenger compartments.
  • In the 2nd class wagons there are seats in the arrangement 2 + 3, they are arranged in two rows and have a soft design. Folding boards are arranged in the back of the seats. There are televisions and videos in the passenger compartment.
  • In the 3rd class wagons there are seats in the arrangement 2 + 3, they are semi-soft.
  • Waste bins are arranged in each car.

Buffets with release bars are housed in two sidecars in 1st and 2nd class ; they provide tea and coffee and can be used to store and warm food. Apart from the dependency on the class, the carriages are lined with plastic inside, they are equipped with compartments for luggage and lighting, like the ЭД4M (ED4M). Enclosed toilets have been used in the control and side cars. In the central passage between the seats of the 1st and 2nd class cars, carpets were laid, sliding curtains are provided for the windows of the passenger compartment, the windows are tinted. In the control and sidecar there are compartments with coolers and cupboards for storing a pharmacy and inventory, while the car with the bar also has a service compartment.

The electric train is equipped with systems of fire signaling and information of supply called ССЗН-И ( CCSN-I ), with fire fighting systems called УАПВ ( UAPW ), with recording devices on movement КПД-3 ( KPD-3 ), with the УСАВП ( USAWP ) motor vehicle movement , the КЛУБ ( KLUB ) driver's control and also systems of brake management with the designation САУТ ( SAUT ).

The electric train is operated as a regional express train in different regions of Russia on directions that are electrified with direct current . The greatest extent is on the Moskovskaya seleznaja doroga . In addition to regional transport, the vehicles are also used on the airport express to transport from the train stations to the airports. This modification for operation on lines with direct current for increased comfort with the designation ЭД4MKУ (ED4MKU) and the model designation 62-301 was created on the basis of the ЭД4M, although its control car box was identical to that of the ЭД2T .

The electric train is intended for operation on electrified railway lines in inter-district traffic for a track width of 1520 mm with a voltage in the contact wire of 3 kV direct current . It is intended for sections with a distance of up to 700 km on high platforms .

The multiple unit was built as part of the operational project Пассажирские перевозки ( passenger transport ). For the first time the multiple unit ЭД4MKУ.0151 was presented within the framework of the scientific-practical conference Innovative Projects, New Technologies and Inventions . October 2005 presented on the site of the track ring in Shcherbinka . During the development of the new electric train, a number of technological decisions were used that allowed the creation of basically new machines for the Russian passenger transport market. In the basic model of the ЭД4M (ED4M), new basic elements were introduced, which guaranteed a high level of ecology and fire safety, comfortable conditions for the travelers and the operating personnel as well as economy in operation. This particularly distinguished it from the multiple units of the series ЭМ2 . When designing and manufacturing the innovative elements, mainly parts made from local materials and from local production were used.

Compared with the basic model ЭД4MK (ED4MK), the electric train was equipped with a new cab for the engine driver, from the outside it was reminiscent of the series ЭД2T with a borrowed frontal view of the cab from the ЭР2К . The wagons were equipped with leaning sliding doors and were designed for use on high platforms . The unit of the electric train consisted of six 1st class cars and five 2nd class cars including two buffet cars . Contemporary design, ergonomic seats, air conditioning in the passenger compartments, equipment with television and radio broadcasting systems made the journey in the new train a maximum comfort for the passengers.

A total of two electric trains of the series ЭД4MKУ (ED4MKУ) with the inventory numbers 0151 and 0153 were delivered. The two trains corresponded to the 2nd and 3rd generation of high-comfort electric trains for connections between regions. At the beginning of 2009, both trains were given to the North-South Regional Directorate at RŽD by the private company Пассажирские перевозки ( Passenger Transport ) . In October 2009, the vehicles were withdrawn from their provisions with the introduction of the fast travel unit Сапсан and handed over to the Northern Railway in Danilow . From April 1, 2010 to February 1, 2013, they were used as an express on the Moscow - Yaroslavl route. After these trains were reassigned to locomotive traction, the ЭД4MKУ (ED4MKУ) were returned to the October Railway and ran there on the Moscow - St. Petersburg line .

In 2005, a test electric train called ЭД4MKM (ED4MKM) with the inventory number 0155 was created at the Demichowo machine factory , it was created on the basis of the ЭД4MK (ED4MK) and was intended for operation on electrified sections of railway lines on intermediate regions - Connections with a track width of 1520 mm with a voltage in the contact wire of 3 kV direct current . It was intended for sections up to 700 km and equipped for high platforms with a maximum speed of 120 km / h. When compared with the ЭД4MK (ED4MK), it had a number of design differences, mainly due to the streamlined cabin and the doors, which were only intended for exiting on high platforms. With a main composition of ten cars, the number of seats on the train was 416. The electrical equipment of the train was manufactured by the Riga electrical machine works .

In contrast to the ЭД4MK (ED4MK), the ЭД4MKM (ED4MKM) had a more contemporary exterior and interior equipment and also a number of new construction details:

  • smooth, non-corrugated car bodies with increased corrosion protection;
  • new head shape of the control car in a contemporary streamlined shape;
  • Roof with smooth transitions to the walls (up to four times embossed);
  • double-opening outer leaning sliding doors ensure good access to the car for high platforms ;
  • complete inter-car coupling device of the type БСУ-ТМ ( BSU-TM );
  • Placement of bulwarks between the wagons;
  • Intercar transition of the balloon type with a low level is replaced by hermetic intercar transition from the production of Hubner (Germany);
  • The driver's cab is equipped with a unified administration desk;
  • inner design is made of fiberglass and metal panels;
  • Equipment with systems of air conditioning;

In November 2005, the train ЭД4MKM.0155 (ED4MKM.0155) led on the track ring ВНИИЖТ in shcherbinka by the test. It was also shown at a number of exhibitions and made some test runs on the Moscow - Saint Petersburg line . A modernized variant of the electric train ЭД4MKM (ED4MKM), intended for the transport of passengers from train stations to airports, was created with this variant. In comparison with the ЭД4MKM (ED4MKM) it had insignificant structural differences, apart from the hermetic intermediate car transition from the company гармошка ( Garmoschka ) instead of the rubber seal, a gapless central buffer coupling instead of the automatic SA3 coupling and the absence of the intermediate car buffers of this, the passenger compartments were completely changed. All of the cars had 1st class seats, one car was in the VIP category. One of the control cars is used to transport luggage, and there is also a bar car on the train.

In contrast to the ЭД4MKM (ED4MKM) train, the ЭД4MKM-AЭPO (ED4MKM-AERO) train has its own numbering. Seven units have been built so far. Part of the technical equipment of the train was also transferred to new units of the basic model ЭД4M (ED4M) (leaning sliding doors, hermetic transition between the cars, air conditioning).

The energy storage electric hoist for direct current with the designation ЭД4Э (ED4E) has been developed on the basis of the electric hoist ЭД4M (ED4M). The main differences between it and the ЭД4M (ED4M) result from the electrical equipment;

  • To increase the effectiveness of the electric hoist for direct current , the ЭД4Э (ED4E) used new traction drive motors with the designation ТЭД 4-У1 ( TED 4-U1 ) with a nominal voltage of 1500 V and compensation windings.
  • In the drive modes, the regrouping of the electric traction motors provides switching from the series connection of the group to the parallel connection of the group, in the brake mode the regrouping provides switching from the parallel connection in the high-speed zone to the series connection in the medium-speed zone .

The application of the energy storage complex of electrical equipment had the following advantages;

  • Reduction in drag loss;
  • Expansion of the scope of the recuperation brake from the maximum speed down to 7 km / h. With the ЭД4M (ED4M) the recuperation brake only works up to a speed of 55 km / h;
  • Reducing the current load on the power apparatus (line contactors, force controllers, brake switches, etc.) and, accordingly, increasing the reliability of their work and increasing the margin between capital repairs;
  • Increase in acceleration and deceleration as well as the dynamic properties of the train;
  • total reduction of the output of electrical energy on the movement of the train in the medium speed range by 16 - 24%, depending on the route profile;
  • Reduction of electrical energy emissions from an electric train by more than 580,000 kWh per year.

At the present moment two trains of this series have been produced. In contrast to the other trains of the family ЭД4 (ED4), the trains of the series ЭД4Э (ED4E) received their own numbering. Both trains are z. At the moment postponed by the company. The control car of the train ЭД4Э.0001 (ED4E.0001) is set aside in the Pererwa depot , the control car of the train ЭД4Э.0002 (ED4E.0002) is at the Demichowo machine factory .
