history

In 1865, the Inland China Mission was founded by the British Methodist medic and missionary Hudson Taylor . In 1889 he helped Fredrik Franson and Carl Polnick to set up the German China Alliance Mission . In 1896 the first Swiss, Ernst Fröhlich, traveled to China as an employee. In 1897 Héli Chatelain founded the Phil-African Mission in Angola. In 1902 a Swiss committee of the Allianz China Mission was founded. As a result of the First World War, all German missionaries were expelled from China in 1919, but the neutral Swiss were able to stay. Therefore, from 1922 onwards, the organization was only called Allianz-China-Mission (ACM). In 1940 the Swiss association Allianz-China-Mission was founded. In 1951 the last Swiss employees had to return from the Communist People's Republic of China, and shortly afterwards a collaboration with the Phil-African Mission in Angola was established.

In 1953 a new area of work was started in Japan and in 1963 in Brazil. Because of the war of independence in Angola from 1961 to 1974 and its consequences, more employees were sent to Brazil. In 1967 the Alliance China Mission was renamed the Swiss Alliance Mission (SAM), while the Phil-African Mission was called Alliance Missionnaire Evangélique (AME) from 1968. In 1977 the employee Gandhi Marinova was kidnapped by the Angolan resistance movement Unita and only released in 1978.

In 1981 medical work began in Guinea at the invitation of the government. The SAM has been involved in Sri Lanka since 1992. In the same year, SAM and AME merged, but kept their names. In 1999 the employee Therese Fuhrer was murdered in Angola.

A change of strategy took place in 2000, since then the focus has been on project work based on partnership. Since then, various projects have been handed over to local employees and their organizations. The organization has been headed by Jürg Pfister since 2008. In the same year the SAM handed over its work in Japan to the Overseas Mission Association (ÜMG). In 2011 the aid organization Vision Africa (VIA) was integrated into the SAM, which made Cameroon, Burkina Faso and Chad the SAM countries of operations.

In 2014, SAM again received publicity because SAM employees in Guinea in Macenta , in the area of the Ebola virus outbreak, continued to provide medical care and did not leave the country during the epidemic.

SAM has been active in India and Cambodia since 2016. In 2017 a project was started among migrants in Switzerland. In the same year, the SAM and the AME changed their names to SAM global, where SAM now stands for serve and multiply . Primarily with education and help for self-help, livelihoods should be improved and people changed.
