history
Today's SS Maceratese was founded in 1922 under the name Unione Calcistica Maceratese , resulting from a merger of the local clubs FC Macerata, Helvia Recina, Robur Macerata and Virtus Macerata. The association is based in the 40,000-inhabitant city of Macerata in the central Italian region of Marche . The SS Maceratese is traditionally the third most famous club in the region after Ascoli Picchio FC 1898 and AC Ancona . The SS Maceratese plays its home games in the Stadio Helvia Recina . Opened in 1964, it can seat a total of 5,850 spectators and takes its name from a historic building called Helvia Recina , located in the province of Macerata .
After the first few years of its existence were largely amateurish and with numerous name changes, it took part in 1929/30 as Società Sportiva Macerata in the newly founded Prima Divisione as the third highest division in Italy . Here they stayed in the midfield for two years, but in 1932 the license was withdrawn and the associated relegation to regional football for Marken. As AC Macerata in 1936 managed to return to the third division, which is now under the name of Series C ran. After eighth place in the first and third place in the second year, AC Macerata ended the 1938/39 season in first place for Girone F. In the promotion playoffs, however, they had to admit defeat to CC Catania and Molinella Calcio . In the following year, however, the promotion to Serie B worked . After the Girone F was again finished first, the team of coach Gino Rossetti prevailed in the playoffs against AC Varese and Mater Rome and made it to the second highest division in Italy for the first and to this day only time in the club's history. There, however, the relegation did not succeed, with only 21 points from 34 games and nine points behind the first non-relegation place occupied by AC Pisa , the direct relegation followed. Maceratese then stayed in Series C between 1943 and 1945 until the war-related break.
After the end of the war, AC Maceratese continued to play in Serie C for the time being, but could no longer build on the performances shown before 1943. Consequently, after the end of the 1951/52 season, they were relegated to the IV series, only to be passed straight through to the fifth highest division a year later. 1955 even followed the relegation to the Prima Divisione Marche, whereby Maceratese only played sixth class. The club quickly recovered from this downward trend, as early as 1959 they played again in Serie C for a year, but had to relegate again immediately. After a few Serie D years, Maceratese acted again for a long time in third class from 1963 to 1969, whereby in the 1966/67 season the promotion to Serie B was missed by only one point against AC Perugia . Another third-class phase followed a little later between 1970 and 1973.
After relegation from Serie C in 1973, Maceratese disappeared for a long time from the third division. They initially played for seven years in Serie D and from 1979 in the new Serie C2 as the fourth highest division. From there, Maceratese suffered a deep crash in the late 1980s, with three descents in a row, until they finally only acted in seventh class. After a re-establishment in 1991 as Associazione Calcio Nuova Maceratese gradually returned to national football, in 1993 Macerata played again in the C2 series. Despite temporary relegation, they were able to establish themselves in the league, from which they were only relegated again in 2001 and as a result sank again for years in Serie D and Eccellenza. During this time various name changes took place - from 2002 to 2009 as AC Maceratese , from 2009 to 2011 as Fulgor Maceratese 1922 and finally from 2011 as SS Maceratese . Under the name SS Maceratese , the club finally managed to return to the third division in 2015 after 42 years. The Girone F of Serie D was the first to finish with four points ahead of Alma Juventus Fano in 1906 , which enabled promotion to Lega Pro for the 2015/16 season .
