Sabrina Starke
Sabrina Starke (born August 9, 1979 in Paramaribo , Suriname ) is a Dutch singer-songwriter from Rotterdam . She became known in 2008 with her gold album Yellow Brick Road . Her musical direction alternates between soul , rhythm & blues and jazz .
Life
Born in Suriname, Stark came to the Netherlands before she was even one year old. From the age of 20 she pursued a determined career as a musician. First she sang in the contemporary R&B formation Maintain and four years later in the Rotterdam reggae band Equal . She learned to play the guitar and began to compose and write her own repertoire. In May 2007 she won the “Talent Night” in the sold out “Oude Luxor” in Rotterdam. Only then did she get the opportunity to record her own album. The associated prize money from the Rotterdam Music Matters Award 2007 was the start-up capital for her first own album.
Together with Giovanca Ostiana, Neenah, Ntjamrosie and Senna Gourdou, she also appeared in the formation "The Mighty 8". The album Anthem was released in 2007 by this women's band, made possible by the Nationaal Pop Instituut (1997-2007) . Two of the titles on it came from Starke.
Her debut single Do for Love was released in summer 2008 and reached number 5 in the Nederlandse Top 40's Tipparade and rose to number 10 in the single Top 100 . The album Yellow Brick Road followed on October 1, 2008. It was produced and recorded in Los Angeles by the Dutch producer duo Beat Royalty (Chris Kooreman and Edo Plasschaert). It was mixed in Burbank by Brad Gilderman. Most of the compositions on this album were written together with bassist Robert Pronk. The title is borrowed from the musical film The Wiz (1978), a remake of The Wizard of Oz . On March 9th, 2009 the sales of the album reached gold status in the Netherlands . In the Dutch album charts, Yellow Brick Road reached the highest position with ninth place and stayed in the charts for almost a full year.
On October 27, 2008, she signed with Blue Note to publish Yellow Brick Road in the United States. In February 2009, Starke traveled to New York to work with producer Billy Mann (including Pink, Celine Dion, Carole King, Joss Stone and Mary J. Blige) and his team at Blue Note Records. She made two new songs: Home Is You (with Pete Wallace and Lisa Green) and A Woman's Gonna Try (with Pete Wallace and Billy Mann). Both were included as bonus songs on the US edition, the latter was released as a single in the Netherlands in June and reached number 18 in the Top 100.
She also received the Dutch music prizes “Edison Jazzism Publieksprijs” and “Edison Best Pop award for best newcomer” in 2009. The prizes are based on a joint initiative of the Edison Foundation and Jazzism magazine. The singer appeared at the IJAZZ, Parkpop and North Sea Jazz festivals in 2009 .
The second album Bags & Suitcases was created in 2010 in Miami, Florida with producer Pete Wallace (including Pink, Michael Bolton, Herbie Hancock). The songs are a little more folky than on her debut album and mostly geared towards her own guitar playing. It came seventh in the Netherlands in 2010.
In October 2010, Starke went on a nationwide theater tour with the musical show "From the Root to the Soul", in which she played the leading role. Your Surinamese roots play a major theme in terms of content. The show was booked by over 40 Dutch theaters and promoters.
At the beginning of May 2011 she was one of the live acts alongside Jan Garbarek and Stefanie Heinzmann at the 23rd Jazzfest Gronau 2011. In April 2015 Sabrina Starke performed at the concert to mark the fifth anniversary of the ZO! Gospel Choir in the Amsterdam Paradiso .
