The Sachsenspiegel is one of the three regional news magazines of the MDR television .

The program has been broadcast since January 1992 as part of the MDR evening program between 7:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the broadcasting area of ​​the Free State of Saxony . In the first years of broadcast, the Sachsenspiegel was only available from Monday to Saturday, and since 1997 on Sundays. The Sachsenspiegel brings up-to-date information from the broadcasting area on topics of politics, economy, sport, science and culture every day. The magazine is divided into three to four main topics and a news overview. The sport has its own block in the program, which is placed in the program shortly before the weather.

The Sachsenspiegel already had a forerunner in the second program on television in the GDR . From 1988 to 1991, the program “Bei uns in Sachsen” was broadcast there for the first time between 18:45 and 19:00.

The show is produced in the state capital Dresden in the Landesfunkhaus Sachsen. Since July 21, 2008 the show has been produced entirely in a virtual studio. The installation of the tracking and rendering technology required for this as well as the creation of the virtual studio world required almost a year of preparation. In the night program, the program is repeated alongside the other regional news programs on the MDR.

The MDR Sachsenspiegel can be received via the following systems: DVB-T , on the Internet via Zattoo and analog in the cable network, digital in the cable network and DVB-S . The Sachsenspiegel is transmitted via DVB-S on the regional channel MDR Saxony.

In the last 15 years, the studios as well as the sets and presenters of the programs have changed from time to time. Beate Werner, who moderated the forerunner program and later also the Sachsenspiegel for many years, was the best known and most formative face of this program.
