Saint-Lazare (also called Saint-Lazare-de-Vaudreuil ) is a city in the southwest of the Canadian province of Québec . It is located in the administrative region of Montérégie , about 45 kilometers west of the center of Montreal and about 22 km east of the border with the province of Ontario . Saint-Lazare belongs to the regional county municipality (municipalité régionale du comté) Vaudreuil-Soulanges , has an area of ​​66.62 km² and has 19,295 inhabitants (2011).

Saint-Lazare lies on the watershed between the Ottawa in the north and the Saint Lawrence River in the south. The former is about six kilometers away, the latter about ten kilometers. The predominantly wooded area is slightly hilly and rises in a westerly direction to a height of 123 meters. Neighboring communities are Hudson in the north, Vaudreuil-Dorion in the east, Les Cèdres in the south, Saint-Clet in the south-west and Sainte-Marthe in the north-west. There is also the Hudson Acres exclave in the northwest, which belongs to Vaudreuil-Dorion.

history

The present city area originally belonged to the Seigneurie Vaudreuil. The first French-speaking colonists settled in the area in 1812 to pursue agriculture. After the end of the British-American War , numerous English-speaking veterans followed suit. For this reason, Saint-Lazare is still bilingual today. The community was founded in 1875 and is named after Saint Lazarus . The municipality has been a member of the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal association of municipalities since 2000, and in 2001 it received city status.

According to the 2011 census, Saint-Lazare had 19,295 inhabitants, which corresponds to a population density of 289.6 inh / km². 53.3% of the population stated French as their main language, while English accounted for 36.5%. 2.3% said they were bilingual (French and English), other languages ​​and multiple answers accounted for 7.9%. 19.0% spoke only French and 11.5% only English. In 2001, 72.7% of the population were Roman Catholic , 14.4% Protestant and 8.3% of no religious denomination.

Autoroute 40 , the highway between Montreal and Ottawa, runs in the northern part of the urban area . Various roads connect Saint-Lazare with the surrounding communities. A CIT La Presqu'Île bus line connects Saint-Lazare with the Vaudreuil-Dorion train station ; there is a connection to the AMT local trains to Montreal. The Montreal – Toronto line of the Canadian Pacific Railway runs close to the southern city limits, but has only been used for freight traffic since 1960.
