history

In 1833 the Russian-American Company founded a settlement on Norton Sound and named the place "Redoubt St. Michael". Like the peninsula, the place name was named after the Archangel Michael . After Alaska was sold by Russia to the US in 1867, some Russian dealers stayed in the place. In 1897 a US military post was set up under the name "Fort St. Michael". During the gold rush that began shortly afterwards, up to 10,000 adventurers settled in the town, which is conveniently located in terms of transport, and there was a lively trade with the Yupik . After the gold rush ended, the adventurers left the area again. During the flu epidemic of 1918, many people came to Saint Michael from the surrounding regions. The place remained an important transshipment point until the main line of the Alaska Railroad was completed . In 1969 the City of Saint Michael was officially founded . The sale, import, and possession of alcohol are prohibited in Saint Michael.
