The Sainte Anne Marine National Park ( Sainte Anne Marine National Park ) was founded in 1973 in the state territory of the Seychelles , more precisely the administrative district of Mont Fleuri . Today the park is known and appreciated by tourists for its rich, partly endemic fauna and flora, and it is a popular diving and snorkeling area .
Location and geography
The park comprises six small islands as well as reefs and bodies of water and is located approximately 5 km from the main island of the Seychelles, Mahé , in the Indian Ocean .
The park consists of the following islands:
- Ste. Anne Island , 2.19 km², on which the luxury hotel Sainte Anne Island Resort is located. The island was the place of the first settlement of the Seychelles and served in the past both as a whaling station and (during World War II ) as a naval base for the British Navy ,
- Île au Cerf , 1.27 km², on which there are three hotels ( Cerf Island Marine Park Resort , Fairy Tern Chalets and L'Habitation ) and the Kapok Tree restaurant with around 100 inhabitants ,
- the next to the Cerf Island preferred Ile Cachée , 0.021 square kilometers, a breeding ground for seabirds ,
- Round Island , 0.018 km², a former leper colony, on which an exclusive resort was opened in 2011,
- Long Island , 0.212 km², former quarantine island on which the state prison is currently located,
- Moyenne , 0.089 km², a privately owned island, which is also a national park in its own right, and on which rumor has it an old pirate treasure is hidden.
The total area of the six islands, which are completely in the area of the so-called Inner Islands , is 3.80 km²; the park covers a total of 14.43 km².
The islands of the Sainte Anne Marine National Park are all islands of volcanic origin , thus - like all the islands of the Inner Islands - granite islands .
