Moyenne [mwajɛn] ( French moyenne , mean ') is an island in the Seychelles in the Indian Ocean . It is located 4.5 km north of the island of Mahé , on which the capital of the Seychelles, Victoria , is located. Moyenne has an area of 0.089 km² and is no longer continuously inhabited after the death of the former owner. The island, like the other islands of the Sainte Anne Marine National Park, belongs to the administrative district of Mont Fleuri .

Usage and history

Before its current use, the island was not regularly inhabited from around 1915 until the 1970s and was almost completely cleared during the colonial period . It was bought by British journalist Brendon Grimshaw in 1962 for around 8,000 to 10,000 British pounds . After his job as editor of various English newspapers in the former British colonies had given up in Africa and moved his residence to complete Moyenne he began, the island with the help of the locals René Antoine Lafortune again reforest . In this context, around 16,000 trees, including over 40 endemic species such as the Coco de Mer , were planted on the formerly dry island, which was only covered by sparse bushes .

Moyenne is part of the Sainte Anne Marine National Park and has been a nature reserve since the 1970s . Under the name Moyenne Island National Park , the island, after long-term efforts by Grimshaw and Lafortune, was raised to the status of an independent national park in 2009 - as of 2011 the smallest independent national park in the world. The island's status as a protected national park is ensured by a specially established foundation , the Moyenne Island Foundation .

In parallel to its status as a reserve, Moyenne is used as a sustainable tourist destination. Apart from a small beach bar , the Jolly Roger Bar , and the opportunity to swim and snorkel in the sea , fauna and flora , as well as an old pirate cemetery, are the island's attractions, which can be explored on various paths.

The island has not been continuously inhabited since Grimshaw passed away in 2012.

Moyenne Island, located in the area of the so-called Inner Islands , is of volcanic origin , so it is one of the granite islands .

climate

The climate and weather situation are comparable to that of the main island of Mahé, only 4.5 km away .

Flora and fauna

Apart from the flora and fauna typical of the Seychelles, the population of Seychelles giant tortoises deserves special mention, which is one of the largest contiguous populations in the world with currently over 100 animals .

Trivia

It keeps the rumor of hidden on the island pirate treasure ; the “Treasure of Labuse”, which was part of the booty of the legendary French corsair La Buse , and which, according to various sources, is now worth around 30 million British pounds. Grimshaw himself invested a lot of time and energy in the search for this treasure in two large and various smaller excavations . He often reported this story to tourists as part of island tours, but he gave up the search for the treasure several years ago.

It is also said, not least through Grimshaw's stories, that the island is haunted by the ghost of a certain Mary Best , an Englishwoman who lived on the island around 1910.

René Antoine Lafortune , adopted son of Grimshaw and temporarily also located on the island, in the early 2000s a cancer succumbed, and on Mahé buried .

Brendon Grimshaw died in July 2012 at the age of 87 in Victoria on the main island of Mahé.
