action

The film takes place during the Punic Wars . Immediately after the First Punic War, which Carthage lost, the city found itself unable to pay its soldiers the outstanding wages. The mood reached zero when finally the soldiers of a certain regiment were treated extremely badly. Thereupon their leader, the soldier Matho, places himself at the head of a rebellion. The freed slave Spendius joins his side.

Together they move towards the city with his men. But their fate turns bad when the Numidian prince Fool 'Havas, once their ally, turns against Matho. This betrayal gives the leader of the Carthaginian troops, Hamilcar Barkas, upper water, especially since Hamilcar sees in Matho the seducer of his beloved daughter Salambo. On Matho's wedding day with Salambo, Matho, caught in the clutches of his opponents, is tortured to death. Devastated, Salambo dies on Matho's corpse.

criticism

In Paimann's film lists you can read: “In the foreground is the generous and in every respect well-made presentation of the picture, which alone raises it above average. The representation is consistently very good, as is the photography, with the exception of a few scenes. The weakness of the picture, on the other hand, is its subject, mainly filmed history, which is therefore somewhat poor in dramatic action. "
