Salim Washington

Salim Washington (* 8. July 1958 in Memphis (Tennessee) as Michael S. Washington ) is an American jazz musician ( tenor saxophone , flute , oboe , composition ) and cultural historian .

Live and act

Washington grew up in Detroit and then attended Harvard College , which he left in 1978 to work as a musician. He was tutored by trumpeter Billy Skinner and saxophonists Bill Pierce and Joe Allard. He first played in the Worlds Experience Orchestra , which was led by bassist Jamil Jones. He then toured with Solar and subsequently worked in Detroit with Hakim Jami, Roy Brooks and other bands. For much of the 1980s he was a member of Billy Skinner's double quartet in Boston, before forming his own band, Roxbury Blues Aesthetic . He was also politically active, studying American history at Harvard University since 1993 and receiving his doctorate in 2001 on the subject of Beautiful Nightmare: Coltrane, Jazz, and American Culture . He has also composed for various ensembles such as the Phantom Arts Ensemble , the Flamingos , the New School and the Des Moines Symphony .

In 2001 he moved to New York, where he became a member of Frank Lacy's Vibe Tribe and was appointed professor at the Brooklyn College Conservatory . From 2002 he directed the Harlem Arts Ensemble and toured internationally with the Creative Music Coalition . He has also worked with Donald Smith , Ahmed Abdullahs Diaspora , Jabbo Wares We, Me and Them Ensemble , Antonio Dangerfields Ensemble Uniqua , the Brooklyn Repertory Ensemble , Fred Ho's Afro-Asian Music Ensemble and the Henry Cook Band . In the Eco-Music Big Band he fuses the music of Fred Ho with that of Cal Massey . He can also be heard on albums by Makanda Project , Bill Lowe / Carl Atkins and Katy Roberts. After his first teaching experience in South Africa in 2009, he became a professor at the Music Faculty of the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2013 .

He is married to the violist Melanie D. Dyer.
