The University of KwaZulu-Natal (English University of KwaZulu-Natal , UKZN for short ) is a university in the province of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa . It was created in 2004 by merging the two largest educational institutions in KwaZulu-Natal, the University of Natal (founded in 1910) and the University of Durban-Westville (founded in 1971).

organization

The university is headed by a Vice-Chancellor ("Vice Chancellor"), the Executive Management also includes six Deputy Vice Chancellors, an Executive Dean , an Executive Director and a CFO . The Chancellor is the highest representative in charge of the University for the award of degrees. Management is responsible to the University Council, which together with the Senate determines the guidelines and is responsible for financial planning and academic affairs.

The university is divided into four colleges :

The individual colleges are further divided into schools .

Campus areas

The faculties are divided into five different campus areas:

  • Howard College Campus ( ), Durban, Berea district (until 1931 Natal Technical College )
  • PMB Campus ( ), Pietermaritzburg , (formerly Natal University College (1906), later University of Natal )
  • Westville Campus ( ), Westville (formerly University of Durban-Westville )
  • Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine ( ), Durban (formerly Medical School , later University of Natal Medical School (1951))
  • Edgewood Campus ( ), Pinetown (formerly Edgewood College of Education )

During apartheid , the university was only approved for whites, although efforts were made under Ernst Gideon Malherbe to admit students of other ethnic groups. The University of Durban-Westville, with its forerunner University College for Indians, was originally founded by the apartheid regime for the population of Indian origin . Founded in 1950, the Medical School was one of the few tertiary educational institutions open to blacks under the apartheid regime.

The university was hit several times in 2008/09 by strikes by teachers and students and by police operations.
