The Salzachgeier ( western 2469  m above sea level , eastern 2466  m above sea level ) is a rugged double peak on the edge of the Kitzbühel Alps on the border of Salzburg and Tyrol .

In the Karen and high alpine pastures of its eastern slope and the two neighboring peaks Fünfmandling ( 2401  m ) and Schwebenkopf ( 2354  m ) are the source streams of the Salzach , the main river of the state of Salzburg, to the northeast and south , which gives it its name.

The Salzachgeier is a double peak in which five sharp ridges converge. The lower east summit, 300 meters away, rises directly above the two Salzach spring areas, Salzachboden and Schwebenalm .

While the southern roofing of the summit group descends towards the Gerlos Pass , the watershed to the north ( Salzachjoch 1983  m , to the Brixentaler Kelchsau ) is only one kilometer away from the Ostkarren. There, hanging over the Roßwildalm , there is a mountain chapel, Markkirchl , and a little deeper the New Bamberg Hut of the DAV . To the west the slopes are just as steep (but less rocky) and drain to the Frommbach in the direction of Brixental .

The Salzach vulture is part of the touring area of the Bamberger Hütte and can be reached from there in about 3 hours. It is also easy to reach from the Gerlostal / Oberpinzgau ( Gerlospass ). In winter, a popular ski tour leads to the Salzachgeier.
