Jonathan Saul Freedland (born February 25, 1967 in Great Britain ; pseudonym Sam Bourne ) is a British journalist , columnist , essayist and author of narrative literature. He is of Israeli origin and describes himself as a "liberal Zionist".

After studying politics and economics at Oxford University , Freedland worked as a journalist for the Washington Post , New York Times , Los Angeles Times and Newsweek . He is now an editor and columnist for the Guardian in London , and also directs a program on BBC Radio 4 . He has been reporting on Middle East issues for almost 20 years. He has received several awards for his journalistic activities, including the annual “What the Papers Say” awards in 2002 with the title of Columnist of the Year . There he was praised for his penetrating, original, sharp and very blunt views.

In 1999 he received for his book Bring home the revolution. How Britain can live the American dream the Somerset Maugham Award . In his second book under his real name Jacob's gift. A journey into the heart of belonging , he describes his own family history, from the Jews who immigrated to Great Britain from Eastern Europe to his son Jacob, who now belongs to the fifth generation of the family in Great Britain.

His writing style for his thrillers under the pseudonym Sam Bourne is said to be similar to that of Dan Brown , who also writes thrillers. His thematically very different thrillers are all related to Jewish life and culture. Whether it is about the Orthodox Hasids in New York (in Die Gerechten ), the conflict between Jews and Palestinians in the Middle East over the interpretation of archaeological finds (in The Last Testament ) or an alleged concentration camp survivor (in Day of Reckoning ).

Today he lives in London with his wife and two children.
