Collection of Modern Religious Art
The Collection of Modern Religious Art ( Italian : Collezione d'Arte Religiosa Moderna ) is a 1973 by Pope Paul VI. opened department of the Vatican Museums within the Vatican City .
The Department of Modern Religious Art can now be viewed in 55 large and small exhibition halls of the Vatican Museums. Its halls are located in three large room complexes, mostly on the first floor ("Appartamento Borgia") of the medieval Apostolic Palace, on two floors of the "Salette Borgia" and finally in several rooms below the Sistine Chapel .
The collection includes around 800 works by around 250 international artists, including Auguste Rodin , Vincent van Gogh , Paul Gauguin , Maurice Denis , Odilon Redon , Wassily Kandinsky , Marc Chagall , Paul Klee , Ernst Barlach , Max Beckmann , Otto Dix , Karl Schmidt-Rottluff , Maurice Utrillo , Giorgio de Chirico , Giorgio Morandi , Georges Rouault , Oskar Kokoschka , Bernard Buffet , Renato Guttuso , Giacomo Balla , Alfred Manessier , Francis Bacon , Giacomo Manzù , Eduardo Chillida , Salvador Dalí , Pablo Picasso and Peter Hecker .
Further works entered the collection in 1977 as gifts from contemporary artists on the occasion of the 80th birthday of Paul VI. on September 26, 1977. With these dedication gifts, the expansion of the Vatican collection for contemporary religious art was temporarily completed in 1977. After John Paul II became Pope in 1978, only a few new acquisitions were made in the collection.
