Sammy Penn

Samuel "Sammy" Penn (born September 15, 1902 in Morgan City (Louisiana) , † September 18, 1969 in Florida ) was an American jazz musician ( drums , vocals ).

Penn played in New Orleans in the Eureka Brass Band , with Chris Kelly , Kid Rena , and Kid Thomas Valentine , with whom the first recordings were made in 1954. In the 1960s he still played with Emile Barnes New Orleans Four, the Hall Brothers Jazz Band (with trombonist Russ Hall and pianist Stan Hall ), the December Band (with Kid Thomas Valentine, Jim Robinson , Sammy Rimington , Captain, among others John Handy ). In 1966 he was with Johnny Wiggs co-leader of the Penn-Wiggs New Orleans All Stars (with Louis Nelson , George Lewis , Charlie Hamilton , Joe Butler ). In the late 1960s, he was still playing with Big Bill Bissonette , Punch Miller , Jimmy Archey's Crescent City Delegates of Pleasure, Emmanuel Paul , the Kid Thomas Dixieland Band and Kid Sheik Cola . He was involved in 59 recording sessions from 1954 to 1959.
