Samsara - Spirit and Passion is a film directed by Pan Nalin , shot in India ( Kashmir ) in 2001 .
action
The Buddhist monk Tashi meditated in seclusion for three years, three months, three weeks and three days. When he is fetched by monks from his home monastery, he looks lifeless. Only after some time does he recover and is admired by the other monks for his intensive meditation practice. But Tashi is now more interested in his sexuality than in his previous spiritual goals.
On a trip to a nearby village, Tashi meets a young woman - Pema - and falls in love. Back at the monastery, his doubts about monastic life and the strict rules grow ever greater. This does not go unnoticed by the wise Abbot Apo. He sends Tashi to a hermit who initiates him into the secrets of love and sacred tantra . Tashi then decides to end the monastic life. He takes off his monk's robe and goes to the Pema family. There he can be employed as a farm worker. Tashi and Pema get closer and closer - and eventually they get married.
Tashi now has both legs in worldly life. The love affair with Pema has a child. But the initial experiences of happiness, love and relationship are increasingly joined by painful experiences over the years. He succumbs to forbidden temptations, feels the negative effects of lies, hatred and violence. Tashi realizes that life outside the monastery is also difficult and full of pitfalls. He wonders whether to return to monastic life and leave his wife and child behind, or whether to continue his worldly life.
Tashi secretly leaves his family, shaves his head and puts on his monk's robe again. On the way to the monastery he meets Pema who is looking for him. Pema reproaches him for leaving his wife and child behind. She also tells him that his going back to the monastery is selfish. She asks him why only he should go the spiritual path and why not Pema. Tashi bursts into tears, asks her forgiveness and promises to return to his wife and child. Pema then gives him the monk's bowl he had brought with him and rides away. However, the last scene also allows other interpretations.
Reviews
- The world : fairytale and authentic at the same time
- Tagesspiegel : Nalin tells straightforwardly, as if it were a legend of a saint; the measured rhythm sometimes develops an almost floating quality. But like his hero, the director stumbles over the allure of the all too obvious beauty - and the portrayal of passions. This is ridiculously brought to a climax when Tashi is persuaded to commit adultery by a farm worker using a love technique called the 'mill' in the Kama Sutra, practiced with the help of a ceiling beam and a sari wound into a string. Thanks to Buddha, wife Pema approaches at the right moment.
background
- Pema is played by Christy Chung , the former Miss Chinese International
- In Buddhism, samsara is seen as a cycle of growth and decay. Suffering and imperfection are part of samsara. The ultimate goal of Buddhist practice is to overcome suffering (and therefore samsara) and to attain the state of nirvana .
