history

The MSC Los Angeles on the Elbe

A total of 15 ships of the Samsung 5500 class were built between 1999 and 2002 at the Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard in South Korea for the Hamburg shipping company ER Schiffahrt . Initially, ER Schiffahrt had ordered eight units with the option for five more. The first eight ships were put into service between the end of 1999 and the end of 2000. Five of the ships were chartered to OOCL , three to P&O Nedlloyd .

ER Schiffahrt then had the seven other ships built, which were put into service from mid-2001 to the end of 2002. Of these ships, one found initial employment with OOCL, two went to CSCL and four to APL . The ships were financed through ship funds from Nordcapital , which, like ER Schiffahrt, belongs to ER Capital Holding.

Other ships of the same type were built for the Greek Danaos Group, which were later taken over by APL.

Technical specifications

The ships have eight holds with 15 hatches. The container capacity is 5,762  TEU , with a homogeneous load of 14 t per container still 4,204 TEU. There is space for 3,160 TEU on deck and 2,602 TEU below deck. There are connections for 656 reefer containers , 456 on deck and 200 below deck.

The deckhouse is located about two thirds of the length aft.

The vessels are of a MAN B & W - diesel engine driven, the Samsung Heavy Industries in license built. The twelve - cylinder two - stroke diesel engine has an output of 54,840  kW . With a daily consumption of 228 t of heavy fuel oil , the ships have an operating range of 21,000  nautical miles .
