Samuel Bottschild (born August 2, 1641 in Sangerhausen , † May 29, 1707 in Dresden ) was a Dresden painter who is best known for his wall and ceiling paintings .

Life

Bottschild came from a family of painters. His father Andreas Bottschild the Elder was a fresco painter, and his brother Johann Andreas, who was eleven years his senior, was also a painter. Samuel received his first lessons from both of them. He had been working in the Leipzig area since 1660 and then went to Dresden.

In 1673 he went on a trip to Italy with his student and relative Heinrich Christoph Fehling , which took him to Venice and Rome . Bottschild entered the service of the Saxon court. In 1677 he became a painter at the court and in 1699 inspector of the collection of paintings at the Kunstkammer in Dresden.

Works

While Bottschild initially devoted himself to painting and mainly painted portraits, after his trip to Italy he turned to ceiling painting. The court engraver Moritz Bodenehr published a collection of engravings based on paintings by Bottschild in 1693 . It is entitled Opera varia historica, poetica et iconologica .
