San Benito is a country town in the department of Cochabamba in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

San Benito is the largest town in the canton of Sunchu Pampa in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) of San Benito in the province of Punata . The village is located on the northern edge of a 15 × 25 kilometers large fertile plain at an altitude of 2714  m , twelve kilometers south of Cerro Tuti (4102 m), the highest point between the region.

San Benito is in the transition area between the Bolivian Altiplano in the west and the Bolivian lowlands in the east.

The mean average temperature of the region is just under 18 ° C (see climate diagram Cochabamba) and fluctuates only slightly between 14 ° C in June and July and 20 ° C in November. The annual precipitation is around 450 mm, with a pronounced dry season from May to September with monthly precipitation below 10 mm, and a humidity period from December to February with 90 to 110 mm monthly precipitation.

San Benito is 43 kilometers south-east of Cochabamba , the capital of the department.

From Cochabamba, the paved road Ruta 7 leads past San Lorenzo (Punata) , crosses the Cordillera Oriental to the east and leads on its way into the Bolivian lowlands via the cities of Tolata and Samaipata to the lowland metropolis of Santa Cruz .

Due to the historical population distribution, the region has a high proportion of Quechua population, in the municipality of San Benito 90.7 percent of the population speak the Quechua language.
