The Church of San Fiorenzo or San Firenze was an ancient place of worship in Florence , located on the corner of Piazza San Firenze (from which it, albeit derived, its name) and Via Borgo dei Greci.

history

The church is mentioned for the first time as early as 1174, but its appearance mainly dates back to the reconstruction in the 13th century. It was under the patronage of the Abbey of Montescalari, a fact that sparked some conflicts between the bishop and the parishioners between 1241 and 1271. It was part of the 36 parishes of ancient Florence.

In 1645 it was incorporated into the San Firenze complex , which had been acquired five years earlier. Redesigned by the architect Zanobi del Rosso , it was later the court's audience room.

description

The ancient appearance of the church can only be seen on old plans, which show it as small with a normal gable facade. Inside, however, old spurts have been preserved, mainly because of the elevated choir above the crypt.

There were some inscriptions inside. One commemorated the enlargement of the choir in 1276 and one of the general restoration in 1280. Among the coats of arms of the families that took over the patronage, the coats of arms of the Magalotti and the Mancini were particularly common. The main altar, a polyptych by Pacino di Buonaguida , is now in the Galleria dell'Accademia . It shows a crucifix between Mary and Mary Magdalene in the middle and the Holy Bishop Nicholas, Bartholomeus, Fiorenzo and Luca on both sides.

On the side altar of the Gangalandi family there was a fresco of little artistic importance and a panel with the coronation of the Virgin Mary among numerous saints, among whom the presence of the Blessed Uniliana de 'Cerchi was striking. In the chapel of Del Tovaglia there was a plaque with the Ten Thousand Martyrs of Stradano . The Mancini Chapel contained an inscription commemorating its founding in 1335.

The tabernacle for the Holy of Holies came from the workshop of Della Robbia and is now in the Bargello .

Near the church were the two towers of the Magalotti and the Mancini, which were demolished on May 16, 1643 to make way for the new complex of San Firenze. A plaque commemorates her in Via Borgo dei Greci , on the corner of the old church. In return, the families demanded the obligation “to celebrate some masses every year” (Paolo Verzoni, Ricordi).

excavation

During an excavation between October and December 2008, traces of the 13th century church were found in a limited area on the side of Via Borgo dei Greci. It was found that it stood above an early medieval cemetery (the area was only incorporated into the walls after 1173–1175 ), which in turn was located above the remains of an Isis temple. Traces of this had already been found in 1772, when excavations for the foundations of the new Filipino complex found some medals and ancient foundations on which coarse Pietraforte cylinders rested (perhaps already covered with stucco), but in connection with the nearby one Roman theater had been brought.
