The church of San Juan Bautista in Moarves de Ojeda , a place in the municipality of Olmos de Ojeda in the province of Palencia in the Spanish autonomous region of Castile-Leon , was built at the end of the 12th century and was later replaced by a Gothic building. A magnificent portal on the south facade and the baptismal font have been preserved from the Romanesque church . In 1931 the church dedicated to John the Baptist was declared a monument ( Bien de Interés Cultural ).

architecture

The church is built from regularly hewn ashlar stones using the opus quadratum technique . A pointed bell gable ( espadaña ) rises above the west facade, which is pierced by three arched openings. A double triumphal arch opens the nave in the east to a square, closed choir .

South portal

In a narrow ledge on the south facade opens under one of corbels supported canopy the portal that clearly stands out by its reddish-yellow stone from the rest of the building. In the upper part runs a wide sculptural frieze , in the middle of which Christ is depicted as Majestas Domini . He is dressed in a sumptuous, pleated robe and is framed by a mandorla . He has raised his right hand as a blessing, in his left he is holding a book. It is surrounded by the evangelist symbols , the human figure of Matthew (top left), the eagle of John (top right), the lion of Mark (bottom left) and the bull of Luke (bottom right). Six apostles are grouped on either side . Most of the apostles are represented with a book, while Paul and John have scrolls in their hands. The figures stand under five-pass arches and are separated from one another by slender columns decorated with leaf capitals . The small structures above the arches are interpreted as the gates of the heavenly Jerusalem , whose access is made possible through the mediation of the apostles. The figure zone is supported by two strong, carved corbels. On the left stone is a human head with dog ears, the right stone shows St. Georg fighting the dragon.

The entrance is surrounded by archivolts decorated with round bars , checkerboard friezes and acanthus leaves. The fighters are decorated with stylized leaves, the capitals are figurative. Dancers and musicians can be seen, a dancing couple and a couple hugging, knights in armor and Samson's fight with the lion.

The upper part of the baptismal font was partially renewed.
