San Lorenzo (also: Villa San Lorenzo ) is a country town in the Tarija Department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia and one of the region's most important folklore centers .

Location in the vicinity

San Lorenzo is the central place of the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) San Lorenzo and the administrative seat of the province Eustaquio Méndez . The city is located at an altitude of 2002  m at the mouth of the Río Tojtiwaysho in the Río Nuevo Guadalquivir , 15 kilometers north of Tarija , the capital of the department.

geography

San Lorenzo is located on the southeastern edge of the plateau of the Bolivian Altiplano on the transition to the lowlands. Due to the inland location, the climate is dry for more than half of the year, but much less harsh than the plateau and has a typical daytime climate, in which the temperature fluctuations between day and night are usually significantly greater than the seasonal fluctuations.

The annual average temperature of the region is 19 ° C (see climate diagram Tarija) and fluctuates only slightly between 15 ° C in June / July and 22 ° C from December to February. The annual precipitation is about 550 mm, with a strongly pronounced dry season from April to October with monthly precipitation below 30 mm, and a humidity period from December to February with over 100 mm monthly precipitation.

population

The population of the village has increased by around half in the past two decades:

year Residents source
1992 2,340 census
2001 2,752 census
2012 3 401 census

One of the great leaders of Bolivian independence, Eustaquio Méndez , who gave the province its name, was born in San Lorenzo . Some of his personal belongings and weapons are still on display in the Casa del Moto Méndez museum.

Townscape

Part of the townscape, like the church from 1709, has a colonial ambience, with richly carved balconies and cobbled streets.

Transport network

San Lorenzo is located fifteen kilometers by road north of Tarija , the capital of the department of the same name.

The asphalted highway Ruta 1 leads through Tarija, which crosses the entire Bolivian highlands in a south-north direction from Bermejo in the south on the Argentine border to the Peruvian border at Desaguadero and, besides Tarija, also passes the metropolises Potosí , Oruro and El Alto . Twelve kilometers north of Tarija, a paved road branches off to the north at Rancho Norte and after three kilometers you reach San Lorenzo .

sons and daughters of the town

  • Eustaquio Méndez , known as "El Moto" (1784–1841), freedom fighter and namesake of the province of Méndez
  • Óscar González Alfaro , known as Óscar Alfaro (1921–1963), poet, author, storyteller, teacher and publicist
