San Miguel is one of 14 departments in El Salvador and borders on Honduras to the north and the Pacific to the south .

The capital of the department is the city of the same name, San Miguel . The department takes its name from the Archangel Michael . San Miguel was founded on June 12, 1824 and received its current constitutional status on June 22, 1865.

San Miguel is home to the 2130 meter high Chaparrastique Volcano - also known as the San Miguel Volcano .
