San Pablo de Lípez (or: San Pablo) is a town in the Potosí Department in the highlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

San Pablo is both the capital of the province of Sur Lípez and the central place of the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) of San Pablo de Lípez . The place is at an altitude of 4240  m on the left bank of the Río San Pablo , which flows downstream to the Salar de Uyuni .

San Pablo is located on the Bolivian Altiplano between the Andes mountain ranges of the Cordillera Occidental in the west and the Cordillera de Lípez in the east. The region's climate is arid and has a time-of-day climate.

The mean annual temperature of the region is 5.5 ° C (see climate diagram San Pablo), with a monthly average of just over 0 ° C in July and 8 ° C from December to February. The annual precipitation is low 170 mm, whereby the months April to October are almost free of precipitation. Significant precipitation falls only from November to March, with a maximum of 45 mm monthly precipitation in January.

San Pablo de Lípez is 457 kilometers by road south-west of Potosí , the capital of the department of the same name.

From Potosí the trunk road Ruta 5 leads in a south-westerly direction 208 kilometers to Uyuni , from there the Ruta 21 for a further 96 kilometers to Atocha . From Atocha a country road leads in a south-easterly direction along the old railway line 23 kilometers to Escoriani and then leaves the railway line in a south-westerly direction. It reaches Tatasi after thirteen kilometers and San Vicente after another 29 kilometers . From there, an unpaved but well-developed country road leads in a south-westerly direction, which on its way overcomes a pass height of about 4750  m and after 88 kilometers reaches San Pablo .
