The Sana ( Serbian - Cyrillic Сана ) is a river in the northwest of Bosnia and Herzegovina . It rises near Donja Pecka, around 25 km west of Jajce , and flows into the Una in Novi Grad . The Sana is 140.4 kilometers long from the source ( 940  m. Y. Year ) to the confluence with the Una ( 139  m. Y. Y.).

Important tributaries are the Bliha , Dabar , Kozica , Sanica , Zdena , which flows into the Sana in the town of Sanski Most , the Gomjenica , which flows into it at Prijedor , and the Japra , which it receives at Blagaj Japra . Larger towns on the Sana are Ključ , Sanski Most, Prijedor and Novi Grad .

The headwaters of the Sana are in the process of being developed for tourism. For this purpose, hiking trails have been created that lead directly to the karst spring , which is well worth seeing , and a visitor center in Gornja Pecka has been built. The natural beauty of the Sana is, however, severely impaired by the construction of a hydroelectric power station, which is under construction only a few hundred meters downstream from the source (September 2015). Further power plants are being planned for the further course of the Sana. The construction of the hydropower plants is highly controversial, as the diversions threaten the habitat of the endangered huchen . For the Huchen population, the Sana is one of the six most important rivers in Europe. The realization of the power plants would also have negative effects on fly fishing, which is important for tourism .
