The Sandelmühle in Hanau was a water mill in the city of Hanau .

Remnants of the sandal mill

It was located in front of Hanau's old town and castle to the east, near the Kinzig , from where it was fed with its own mill ditch . This uses the backwater of the same weir that provided the water for the Herrenmühle . The mill ditch of the Sandelmühle drains in the direction of the castle garden and fed the watercourses and the pond there. On the street side, the facility is located at Sandeldamm 30.

The oldest surviving components of the sandel mill date from the 16th century. The oil , wood and spice mill was licensed in 1687 and built by Johann Daniel Mack until 1697 . Sandalwood was ground into powder here and dyes, medicines and scented oils were made from the ground product. Next here were cloves , nutmeg , cinnamon , pepper , saffron , laurel , gentian , mustard and tobacco processing. In 1748 the mill was acquired and leased by the sovereign, then Landgrave Wilhelm VIII of Hessen-Kassel . The Frankfurt bank Metzler was one of the tenants . Later privatized again, the mill was converted into a grain mill at the beginning of the 19th century. It was in operation until the end of the 19th century.

The iron water wheel with wooden shovels is still preserved today . The mill is a cultural monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act . It is also part of the route of industrial culture Rhine-Main .
