The Sandkorn Theater was a professional private theater founded in Karlsruhe in 1956 . The carrier was Sandkorn-Theater gGmbH, which went bankrupt in 2017. Since the turn of the year 2017/2018, a newly founded company called "Das Sandkorn - non-profit UG (limited liability)" has been operating under the label DAS SANDKORN - THEATER & MORE, which is independent of the old Sandkorn Theater. The old Sandkorn Theater had its two venues (studio stage and factory) since the beginning of the 1980s in a former, now listed turbine house of the Stadtwerke in Kaiserallee 11. The building itself is the property of the city of Karlsruhe. Before that, the Sandkorn Theater played on a basement stage in Hagenstrasse. The Marotte Puppet Theater and the Jakobus Theater also have their stages in the former turbine house. In 2016, the theaters gave the house a common name: Theaterhaus. The new company DAS SANDKORN - THEATER & MORE uses both of the now renovated stage rooms for its theater operations.

The repertoire of the old Sandkorn Theater included an offer from the fields of children's and youth theater , classical and contemporary drama , music theater and cabaret . Between seven and nine new productions were added to the program each season .

A base of permanently employed actors was supplemented by guests as required.

Since 2006, the Sandkorn Theater has so far held two author competitions. The plays Cyberella by Tommi Linz and RaumZeit by Christian Linker and Stefan Filipiak were premiered at the Sandkorn-Theater with awards from an expert jury .

In 2003 the former Sandkorn Theater launched the integrative theater project D! E SP! NNER! Together with Lebenshilfe Karlsruhe, Ettlingen und Umgebung eV . founded. People with disabilities and professional actors work on stage plays together. So far over ten productions have been made. DAS SANDKORN - THEATER & MORE continues the cooperation with the SP! NNERN! away.

Since 2001, the Sandkorn Theater has been running the so-called youth club , which has a production with up to 40 young people aged between 14 and 22 every season. This offer is still available in the new SANDKORN.

The Karlsruhe School Theater Week has had its home in the Sandkorn Theater since the 1980s. The forum for theater groups of all school types in the Karlsruhe district took place for the 32nd time in 2018.

Numerous guest performances, especially from the fields of cabaret and comedy , were also regularly carried out in the Sandkorn Theater. For example, the cabaret artist Dieter Hildebrandt was a guest ; Martin Semmelrogge , Katy Karrenbauer , Lisa Fitz , Mircea Krishan , Nikolai Kinski , John Doyle and others were also guests . a. The new company expands guest performance to include jazz music and poetry slam.

The new Das Sandkorn - Theater & mehr focuses on self-written pieces in the field of music theater and cabaret. The most recent productions from 1968 - When the planet caught fire and Ludwig fun! come from Karlsruhe authors who have been associated with the Sandkorn Theater for a long time.
