Life

Sandra C. Greer studied chemistry and mathematics at Furman University in Greenville , South Carolina , where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in 1966 . She then went to the University of Chicago , where she completed her master's degree in 1968 and her doctorate in physical chemistry in 1969 . She then found a job at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg , Maryland , where she worked as a chemist in the Heat Division until 1978. She then worked for thirty years at the University of Maryland, College Park . Starting as an Associate Professor, she became Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the Department of Chemistry in 1983 and, in 1995, Professor of Biomolecular Engineering at the Department of Chemical Engineering . She mainly dealt with the thermodynamics of liquids, especially with polymer dispersions and their phase transitions . She was also the director of the university's chemistry faculty between 1990 and 1993. In 1986 she became a Fellow of the American Physical Society .

Since 2008, Sandra C. Greer has been Provost at Mills College in Oakland , California . She is the dean of the chemistry faculty and professor of chemistry and physics as well as the holder of the Scheffler Pre-Health Science Chair . At the college, which was originally oriented towards cultural studies, she is particularly committed to the expansion and reputation of the natural sciences and is committed to encouraging more women to embark on a scientific career. In 2014 she received the American Chemical Society's Award for Encouraging Women into Careers in the Chemical Sciences for her services .
