history

During the Soninke Marabout Wars , two British agents, Cecil Frederick Sitwell and a gentleman named Sylva, were murdered in Sankandi on June 14, 1900 in an attempt to mediate. The British fought back and Sankandi was razed to the ground. The insurgent Kabba Dumbaya was persecuted and killed, and the Soninke Marabout Wars were over.

The Sankandi Monument in front of the Anglican Church of St. Mary's Cathedral in the capital Banjul commemorates this "Battle of Sankandi" .
