Sansevieria zeylanica is a species of plant in the genus Sansevieria in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). The specific epithet zeylanica refers to the place where it was found, Ceylon at that timeand now Sri Lanka.

description

Sansevieria zeylanica grows trunk-forming as a perennial , succulent plant with strong creeping rhizomes up to 1.3 centimeters thick . The five to eleven leaves stand upright at the bottom on a stem, slightly bent back at the top and are linear to semi-cylindrical in shape with a groove on the top. The simple leaf blade is 45 to 76 inches long, 8 to 20 millimeters wide and 5 to 8 millimeters thick. It narrows into a 12.7 to 38 millimeter long, green, soft and awl tip. The leaves are dark green with a light green cross-markings and on the back with 4 to 7 dark green longitudinal lines. The edge of the spread is green. The leaf surface is almost smooth.

The simple annual inflorescences are 30 to 61 centimeters long. The panicles are densely covered with flowers . The supporting sheet is 84 millimeters long. The flower stalks are short. The bracts are white and measure 2.5 to 3.8 centimeters in diameter. The flower tube is up to 3.2 inches long. The tips are up to 3.5 inches long.

Sansevieria zeylanica is widespread in Sri Lanka and India on rocky and sandy spots in arid regions, Mauritius, and Myanmar and Thailand .

Taxonomy

The first description of Sansevieria zeylanica was in 1753 as Aloe hyacinthoides var. Zeylanica by Carl von Linné . In 1799, Karl Ludwig Willdenow introduced the species to Sansevieria .

Synonyms for Sansevieria zeylanica (L.) Willd. are: Acyntha zeylanica (L.) Kuntze (1891), Aloe hyacinthoides var. zeylanica L. (1753), Aloe zeylanica (L.) Jacq. (1762), Cordyline zeylanica (L.) Britton (1930) and Sansevieria indica Herter (1956, nom. Illeg. ICBN -Article 52.1).
