Description and ecology

Victoria cruziana is an herbaceous plant . Its extremely large leaves reach a diameter of 120 cm to 170 cm. Its 25 cm large flower blooms for 2 days after its appearance, initially pure white, which changes to a rich pink on the second and last day of flowering. Victoria cruziana is a thermogenic or heat producing plant. The stigmas of the flower are in a calyx, which is protected by spines. The calyx begins to warm up as a bud, and when the flower opens it releases a strong, sweet scent to attract pollinating beetles and also continues to produce heat during the pollination phase.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.

Taxonomy and Botanical History

The first description of Victoria cruziana was made in 1840 by Alcide d'Orbigny in Annales des Sciences Naturelles; Botanique , Ser. 2, 13, p. 57. Synonyms for Victoria cruziana A.D. Orb. are: Victoria argentina Burmeist. nom. nud., Victoria cruziana var. malmei F. Henkel et al. , Victoria cruziana f. matogrossensis Malme , Victoria cruziana f. trickeri F. Henkel ex Malme , Victoria cruziana var. trickeri F. Henkel et al. , Victoria regia var. Cruziana (ADOrb.) C.Lawson , Victoria trickeri (F.Henkel ex Malme) hort. ex Mutzek .

Victoria cruziana was discovered in Bolivia on one of several expeditions through the country of Alcide d'Orbigny , with financial support from Andrés de Santa Cruz . The first collected samples were shipped to France , where they were named in his honor by Alcide d'Orbigny's brother Charles Henry Dessalines d'Orbigny Santa Cruz Victoria cruziana .
