In its present form it comes from the first half of the 18th century. It is the regional church of the Burgundians (Italian: Borgognoni). It is looked after by members of the Order of the Eucharist .

location

The church is located in the II. Roman Rione Trevi in a place named after the two patrons, about 200 meters northwest of the Trevi Fountain . With its northern side it is diagonally opposite the church of San Silvestro in Capite .

Building history

Originally there was a hospice at this point , which was established by the Burgundians in 1662; this also included an oratorio . The construction of today's church began on April 5, 1728, and was completed in 1729. The church is attributed to Antoine Dérizet (from a source also Filippo Raguzzini ), the facade certainly comes from Dérizet. The French cardinal Melchior de Polignac consecrated the church on March 4, 1731. Since 1866 the church has been cared for by the Eucharist. One last redesign was made in 1963.

Building description

The facade by Antoine Dérizet

facade

The facade is two-story and three-axis on the lower floor. The surface is structured by pilasters according to composite order, with the pilasters of the central axis being three-fold, which emphasizes the central risalite . Niches are set in the travées of the side surfaces. They each contain a statue, on the left that of one of the patrons, St. Andrew , and on the right, the other, St. Claudius . The figure of St. Andrew is a work by Luc François Breton , St. Claudius is by Antoine-Guillaume Grandjacquet , both date from the 18th century. The niches as well as the actual portal are flanked by pilasters of the Tuscan order . The actual portal is vaulted by a round arch and a niche with sloping festoons . Directly above the portal there is a small plaque with the year, the year 1729 is mentioned. The upper floor rises above the cornice with the dedication inscription. A rectangular window breaks through the wall, the side surfaces are not executed, but run out in a steep curve on both sides in pedestals with flame vases. A segmented gable completes the facade, in it a coat of arms with the French lilies . Another four flame vases and a cross crown the facade.

inner space

altar

The basic structure of the church was built over a Greek cross , the longitudinal direction is somewhat longer. The interior is spanned by a dome, which contains a low drum and a lantern . According to the basic structure, it has two cross arms each, the choir with the high altar and the entrance area opposite. Side chapels are added to the left and right of the entrance area. Cross arms and chapels are covered by barrel vaults.

The interior is structured by pilasters according to the Corinthian order , the church is richly decorated with gilding and stucco . The pendentives are provided with stucco figures of the four evangelists . The dome is structured by four wide belts that narrow towards the top and sit on staggered pilasters of the Tuscan order. Four round windows are inserted in the area between the belts. The right cross arm contains a depiction of Saint Charles Borromeo on the altarpiece , created by the baroque painter Placido Constanzi . The painting on the left is modern, it depicts St. Claudius and is by Cleto Luzi , made in 1939.

The painting on the left arm of the cross shows the Resurrection of Christ , made by the French painter Jean-François de Troy in the first half of the 18th century. The painting on the right is also a work by Luzi, also from 1939, it shows the other church patron, St. Andrew .

The right side chapel still contains a baroque altar, the altarpiece depicting St. Joseph is modern. The furnishings in the left side chapel are completely modern.

The high altar contains the altarpiece with the church patrons, a work by Pietro Barbieri from the 18th century. Above the altar is still a fresco is depicted God the Father of Antonio Bicchierai , also from the 18th century.
