Saratoga Spa State Park is a state park in the City of Saratoga Springs area , off US 9 and NY 50 in Saratoga County , New York State . The park is a National Historic Landmark and covers 9.63 km² (2,379 acres ). It has mineral springs , historic baths and spa houses, and the Saratoga Performing Arts Center .

history

Even the Mohawk and Iroquois - Indians used the area around the mineral springs as a hunting ground. They called the area Kayaderosseras . The first recorded use of the springs as a spa was made by Sir William Johnson during the French and Indian War , who healed his wounds in Saratoga.

In the 19th century, the place became a popular health resort due to its hydrotherapeutic effects. Entrepreneurs dug wells and bottled the mineral water for sale, and gas companies sold the captured carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) to soda springs. In 1907 these activities had become so extensive that there was a lawsuit: Frank Hathorn vs. Dr. Strong's Sanitarium . In the course of these negotiations it was shown that pumping in various wells reduced the discharge in the springs in the urban area. The court upheld the connection of the water veins, and when Strong stopped pumping, Hathorn's well returned to its original size. In 1908, when the wells were exhausted, the New York Assembly passed an injunction prohibiting pumping; However, this was initially ignored. In 1909, Governor Charles Evans Hughes signed a bill converting the Saratoga springs into a state reservation.

In the 1930s, funds from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation were used to build bathhouses, a research center and a pump room. The Saratoga Reservation has been set up with paved walking paths to allow cardiac rehabilitation to occur. After the Second World War , veterans and Holocaust survivors were invited to the cure.

In September 1985, the park was listed as a Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places . The seaside resort was declared a State Park in 1962 and recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 1987 .

In 2007 it became known that the supposedly “pure” mineral water was mixed with other drinking water in public pools.

geography

The Saratoga Springs area is home to the only active geysers east of the Mississippi River in the United States. The mineral springs arise in crevices of the Saratoga Fault , which extends 65 mi (105 km) from Whitehall to Albany . The carbonated water is rich in minerals and salts.

Two of the most famous springs are Geyser Island Spouter and Orenda Spring , on Geyser Creek . Geyser Island Spouter sprays a thin plume of water 3 to 5 meters into the air. It was created in the early 1900s. Since then, he has created tufa bellows that grow at a rate of 5 cm / year. Orenda Spring is a massive tufa dome in which leaves and other organic material are still fossilized.

The best known sources are: Hathorne, Orenda, Hayes, Charlie, Geyser Island, State Seal, Polaris and Lincoln (Baths).
